I was WAY too tired to grocery shop and cook today. I NEEDED to rest and recoup from a really long week and a crazy whirlwind two day trip. I DESERVED the time off.

But I knew if I didn't stick to my plan of shopping and cooking, I'd eat junk. I would eat junk today and I'd eat junk tomorrow. So I called my sister and bored her to tears with my LAME excuses. Do you think the mother of two small children had an ounce of sympathy for me? Heck no!

She shamed me, in a nice supportive sisterly kind of way, into getting my @#$%@! to the store and told me to call her when I got home. She stayed on the phone with me long enought to make sure I was in the kitchen prepping.

Baby stepping your way out of behavior that will not serve your health goals is essential for long term success. Accessing support in the MOMENT you're about to go off track is the only way to survive this. I'll-start-again-Monday weight gain costs too much. You have the resources to stay on track. Line them up and access them!

Your homework: Post your Waistline 911 list of emergency procedures here.

I dunno. I've never worked food service but some folks say it in the Government. I think that's where *I* first heard it.

This is timely for me.

Somehow I've gotten on the mental Concorde. I feel as if I'm flying faster than a speeding bullet. For that reason, I have had numerous opportunities and occasions since Wed, to eat out.

When I did eat out - I chose a salad. I've worked very hard to make best choices.

Maybe somebody can help me decide what I should do when I'm an hour away from home and it's time to eat.

For me, my food emergency plan is actually the anti-Nike slogan. Just don't do it. Put down the food. Close the cabinet. Back away from the fridge. Get out of the kitchen! If I just don't start, I'm OK, but once that first stress eating bite passes my lips, it's all over but the cryin'.

Sometimes, looking in the mirror helps, too. If I'm still hungry after seeing what the stress eating demons have done to my waistline, then I figure I must be really hungry...

I don't have any "emergency procedures". I just try to maintain a "Just Do It!" mindset.

Today, it was cold, gloomy, and sometimes rainy outside. Rather than cancelling my scheduled walking, I packed rain gear and extra clothes in a small Duluth Pack, and walked 4.52 miles in a local park reserve.

1. Step on the scale for a reality check.

2. Remember that the last time I had chinese, I was up all night with an upset stomach.

3. Give myself a small treat...such as a small square of chocolate...to savor so that I don't feel deprived.

4. Bubble bath.

LOL...cleaning would drive me to want to eat even more.

First step is to get out of the house, immediately! Walk Run, drive, whatever. I usually head for the golf course, since I can walk there. Or get those doggies on a leash and make them walk me crazy.

Second step is to write, write, and write some more.

Third step is cleaning, cleaning and cleaning. Cabinets, drawers, closets, whatever.

If after these three, I still have urges to do things that aren't healthy, start over.

Get along little doggies!

Lisa's Waistline 911

1. Look at children. Are they the problem? If not, hug, kiss, squeeze, tickle, and play with them. This will usually take care of immediate emergency. If not, see 2. If they ARE the problem, go to 2.

2. Drink water. DO NOT SIP, CHUG! While drinking, count to 10 and visualize all the work you've done to get where you are. Move to step 3.

3. Use online support. You have friends online, use them to help you through the tough times. If online support is not possible, call Mom. She usually has a kind word or two, or will at least distract you for awhile.

4. Exercise. You haven't done your exercise today, have you? Watching those "calories burned" increase on the treadmill will decrease your desire to input more!

5. If all else fails, put on your bathing suit and take a picture. If that doesn't do it, nothing will. Come on, Lisa, you CAN DO THIS!!!!

Hmmm, maybe I depend too much on myself. It is something to watch. If I find myself not being able to pull out of the spiral, I'll have to find a more extensive "other person" support net...

I shopped yesterday so that I have things on hand for a meal every day this week. I do still need to go to Harry's for produce, because the produce at the regular market looked terrible yesterday. I will prob. stop there on my way home from work today or tomorrow. I did buy enough frozen veggies to get me through until I can get to the fresh stuff.

For me, the key is to already have things on hand, so that it is actually easier to just get into the kitchen, than it is to get into the car and drive. Believe me though, in Atlanta traffic, it is generally easier to cook than to get into the car and drive, especially at dinner time.

Not sure if this is what you mean but I know that I need to stop and take a "breather" when I am stressed. Don't go grab anything and everything to eat, wait a few minutes and get your bearings!!!! Drink a glass of water, chystal light or what ever, take a walk, take a bubble bath......

Teach yourself to know when you are in the "stress" mode and teach yourself to find other healthier ways to deal!!!

Stopping to take a breather helps to overcome compulsive habits.
