Since we have all these new threads with new subjects, I thought I'd bring this one up.
I am THE sports fan in my Y chromosome dominated household. No one else knows what I'm talking about.
I'm an avid U of Michigan fan, a Detroit Tigers fan, and because of these two loyalties I have a passing interest in Michigan State and Ohio State games AND most importantly I'm an anti-Yankee fan.
The past week has been frustrating as a Tiger's fan since Detroit really blew the first place finish. They had been in first place almost all season, and lost it on the last day. At least they got the wild card spot.
Which, putting them in the post-season play at least allows me to watch the games on TV rather than sit with my laptop on my lap watching the Yahoo box scores refresh every 30 seconds (something I only discovered about 2 weeks ago).
My next younger sister, who weighs about the same as I do and is 54 still plays softball on 2 teams. I've always joked that my parents had 6 kids and we were all boys! (Not only the sports thing, but that's the prominent reasoning.)
Why, thank you, dear. It was my pleasure -- even though the A's meltdown was a bit painful to endure.
Now my anti-Mets-schooled-in-St.-Louis DH is biting his nails over Game 7 tonight, while DS who loves tigers (the furry kind) and who wants to side with his dad claims that he will root for both teams if the Cardinals go to the World Series. So much drama.
What I have heard and read over and over again from various sports commentators is that Detroit has the best team in baseball.
I was imnpressed with last night's game. Chavez is one hick of a 3rd baseman.
More than one member of my vast family (from Detroit to Northern Ohio to Conneticut all the Tiger fans connected by phone last night!) mentioned that if the Cards win over the Mets, it would be a replay of the 1968 games. Which was the last time I bet on a sporting event! I joke that I only bet on sure things!
And, it must be contagious because the Lion's one their first game today!
It was a fun contest. You can choose the next contest!
At least the A's stayed in this game right up to the end. Gotta love a bottom-of-the-ninth nailbiter, even when your team comes up short.
But as they say, it ain't over till it's over.
When the movie Bull Durham came out, Susan Sarandon did an interview on her views of baseball. She was of the opinion that every playoff series, and especially the World Series, should go to the full number of games. That way, there were as many baseball games played in a year as there could possibly be, and the season lasted as long as possible. I'm adopting that philosophy right now...
1. It is really sad to hear of the death of someone so young under such tragic circumstances. Especially knowing he has a 6 year-old and a twin brother.
2. Mary Jo, exciting finish to tonight's game. Now, on to the home team advantage.
You are right, Susan. The first game may not mean a thing. But, then again, it could mean EVERYTHING!
And, one thing you should know about Tiger fans - we're optimists. Remember we've just come out of the some of the worst history ever for a major baseball league team.
I even read an article either in the electronic Toledo Blade or [i/]Detroit Free Press[/i] that even some people in the Oakland A's think Detroit is the better team.
Dawn, I grew up a big Rangers fan. In fact, even when we lived in Nashville, we followed the Predators games. Went to most of them. The past couple of years, I fell off of the wagon though. I think that it all started during the strike, I just never got back into it.

But that's just one reason why the town needs this diversion so badly!
I like the book idea. I can send you Alice Waters' Chez Panisse cookbook. The restaurant is in Berkeley, but close enough. You put up Mitch Albom's new one, and you're on.
When I came in for a landing, I was going to post "Bring. It. ON!
I, like JFK, don't do hats - unless I'm in the White House - what about a book of the winner's choice? We could set a dollar limit.
Or, I really don't like getting my picture taken - and it's really not my size - but I might consider a picture of my torso in an Oakland shirt.
Or we could write a laudatory poem for the other team to root them on against the National League winner in the World Series. Or - sing a song for the other team???
We have at least until the weekend to figure out - but the bet is on!
And, I'm pretty eclectic in my interests - what is Oakland known for? A bottle of wine? One of the things I think about Detroit is Schaffer's ice cream topping - I know we don't want to go there. Mike Ilitch, the Tiger's owner, also owns the Red Wings Hockey team and Little Caeser's Pizza! (A whole lot better than the last owner, Tom Monaghan's Domino's pizza).
Detroit also has Vernor's Ginger Ale. What else can you come up with on your end?
I could send you a copy of Mitch Albom's newest book - signed (not personalized) or Tuesdays with Morrie which has been signed. I could get either of those personalized, but it would take a little longer. Mitch [b]is a sports writer for the Detroit Free Press.
OK, Linda, I've been trying to think of an appropriate bet...like, if the Tigers win the ALCS, I have to post my photo in a Detroit cap and vice versa. When I lived in Cleveland, I ended up sending some Great Lakes Brewing Co. beer to an Orioles fan friend, but I don't think there's anything from Oakland you'd want. So whaddaya think? How much confidence do you have in your team?
PS - I'm totally focused on baseball right now, because any football team I might root for is a train wreck this year!
