NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - There is no clearcut scientific rationale for the average healthy individual to drink a lot of water -- and it may be downright harmful -- according to two kidney experts.
Drinking a lot of water is claimed to be helpful for everything from clearing toxins and keeping organs in tip-top shape to keeping weight off and improving skin tone. At best, however, the evidence to back up these claims is weak, according to a new scientific review published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
I heard this study on the radio yesterday. A doctor was specifically talking about weight loss and the whole "you must drink your water" myth. The last sentence was something like, "For many people, this becomes a burden". I was struck by the word "burden".
Jill, I thought of you. I've seen posts on the WW board of people who are obsessed with either drinking their water. And there are MANY people who feel really guilty that they are not drinking "enough" water. And it just makes WW way more difficult for some people, than it has to be. I remember you saying that.

I have never looked on water in and of itself as a great weight loss tool but I know that I generally feel better if I drink enough water. If I don't drink enough I get kidney infections, chapped lips and dry eyes. And, (warning TMI coming ) I become very constipated if I cut back on my water intake.
I have gone through long periods of drinking water. I have never, no matter how much water I drank, ever had an increase in weight loss, even with low-calorie and exercise. I will say though, that water drinking does result in better looking skin! I know there is a mixed bag here regarding water consumption. I for one am not convinced that drinking more water contributes to weight loss. I do believe, however, that increased water consumption, vs. soda and some juices, will result in less calories consumed, and better looking skin. As far as other benefits, I'm not convinced! Jill
I have no specific goal(s) right now. I am trying to find the spiritual side of myself that I lost somewhere along the way.
