When you tore your calf muscle, did the doctor do any diagnostic testing like an ultrasound or MRI? I went for a follow-up visit today with my family doc and he disagrees w/the ER doc. He "thinks" it is a bad sprain. So now I have two different diagnoses. Neither have done anything other than palpate the back of my leg. My family doc told me to stay off it, continue using the crutches, take the anti-inflammatory meds and call him Monday if it still hurts and he'll order an ultrasound or MRI. I really hate waiting to see what happens and wondered if you had any tests done to determine your injury.

I agree with everyone else - if you have doctors in conflict over the diagnosis, go see a specialist and have the scan.

PS I didn't have any diagnostic testing for my tear as it was very clear cut as the muscle wasn't in the right place (it had slipped down).
PSS My doctor did have me go back to see him every other day for a week though to make sure there was no tendon, ligament or nerve damage.

I ditto what D said about seeing a specialist.

When was in H.S. I had a cheerleading accident. The ER doctor said my ankle was sprained "wrap it and walk on it" if it doesn't get better in a week see your doctor.

After a week it was more swollen and even worse, went to the pediatrician "It is a bad sprain, elevate it and here are some crutches..."

Finally, went to a specialist and almost all of the tendons and ligaments were torn. I was in a brace for 8 weeks. I don't think I had any tests, other than an X-ray the first day in the ER to make sure it wasn't broken.

I'm not Brie, but I would go see a sports injury/sports medicine doctor--most larger orthopedic groups have at least one of them in the group. It might also be listed as "Kinesiology" as the speciality (but not a chiropractor who does kinesiology, that's a different practice). Orthopedists tend to work more with joints and bones, but should be skilled enough with sports injuries in general to give you a diagnosis, if a sports medicine doctor isn't an option.

Be sure to check your insurance and get a referral from the GP if need be.

Challenge Goals:
*10 minutes of unplanned exercise five times a week
*Gym time twice a week
*Socialize at least once every two weeks.
