Just need to vent for a moment...

Hey everyone. So I needed a place to vent and since it is on the late side I thought it might be rude to call someone. This I thought would be a MUCH better place.

So I decided to talk to my DH tonight about us moving in the direction of buying more of our produce organically. We are lucky that we have a food co-op and harry's (owned by whole foods) not too too far away.

I should preface all this by saying that over the past 5 years he has eaten better, tried more fruits and veggies and worked out more than he ever has. I have been in that mind set for about ten years. right now I really just want to take it to the next level for myself. I feel I can more energy from eating naturally than anything else.

DH is concerned about the costs (which he has a valid point) more than anything. So I think what I am going to do to start things for me is get organic fruits and veggies at Publix and then supplement with some other things (not everything) at the food co-op.

I guess I was hoping for a little more support from him. But, we can't have everything can we?

Hey Steph-hope you are working things out. I don't know how accurate this article is but might be worth the read?!

It has been proven that organic produce (I thought all produce was organic, except maybe the wax fruit in the bowl on my kitchen table) is no more beneficially nutrious than conventionally grown produce.

Part of the expense of anything that is "certified organic" is the expense of getting certified. I have heard that it takes three years. Check out www.athens.locallygrown.net.

It is an on-line farmer's market. All of the farmers grow organically but not all of them have gone to the expense of getting "certified" by the government.

It is sort of like a CSA but you don't pay that big upfront fee for weekly boxes of "surprise ingredients". It costs $25 per year and you get to choose what you want to get. You can order twice before you have to pay the $25. On your third order it is added to your bill.

On Sunday you get an e-mail listing what is available from each farmer and their prices. You have to e-mail back your order by Tuesday and then you go pick it up (and pay for it) on Thursday.

The only draw back (for us) is that the pick up point is in Athens, Ga. so we have decided to order just once a month. We have only done it once so far but we loved the food we got.

They are part of a nationwide group so anyone here on the board can use it. If you look up www.locallygrown.net you can find a group in your own local area.
