Since it's it's a common problem, I thought that I would try to start a long term back pain message chain, in case anyone is interested.

More MRI machines may mean more back surgeries

Mon Oct 19, 2009 1:17pm EDT
By Amy Norton

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study suggests that the increasing availability of MRI scanners may be feeding an increase in surgery for lower back pain -- despite doubts about the effectiveness of surgery for most people.

*****

Surgery can be appropriate for some causes of chronic lower back pain, such as a herniated spinal disk or a narrowing of the spinal canal called spinal stenosis. But for most people with lower back pain, the precise cause is unclear, and the pain often resolves without any extensive therapy.

Because of this, experts generally recommend that people with back pain delay having an MRI for at least a month. And surgery should be considered only when the cause is clear and more conservative treatments fail.

The problem with widespread use of MRI is that the scans -- which visualize soft tissue like the spinal discs and muscles -- can detect anomalies that may or may not be the cause of a person's back woes.

I continue to love my TempurPedic. I just love the feeling of being supported all over which, as I noted in an earlier post, is not possible on a traditional spring firm mattress, esp. when you have a big bottom. Smiler

We bought a memory foam mattress topper.

http://www.overstock.com/Home-...3169354/product.html

It was expensive... but way less than a new mattress. Our old mattress is pretty darn old... 19 years. But it is as rock hard firm and as flat as the day we bought it. Smiler

dh was sick of the "firm" part of it. I'm fine with the firm mattress... but that's me.

But, I actually REALLY like the memory foam topper though. I thought that it was a GREAT alternative to a new mattress, since sagging wasn't the issue. dh was just sick of a hard bed. Or maybe it was OK in our early 30's and not so good when pushing 50.

Sort of. We decided to wait it out. I'm on a short list for a government job (praise whatever entity you choose), and now HIS job is in jeopardy. So spending several thousand bucks on a mattress isn't a great idea.

We did like the memory foam better than the air one, though. Totally.

Neither is waking up sore, but my hip pain is going away slowly...the doctor suspected some tendonitis that would subside in time, I've been going to gym more regularly (3x week), and have a "let's take a walk" buddy at work again. (I had one of those while deployed, and it was a huge help, mentally a physically, to just get up and get away a couple of times a day.) We're on the 3rd floor of our new building, so he and I will go up and down the stairs a couple or three times since it's so hot outside right now.

I went for another shortish (2.77 mile) walk in the park the other day.

Those ThermaCare HeatWraps only get to 104F, but they sure feel toasty warm on my back.

That's too bad. (sigh)

IMHO, it's too bad that a person can't get "real" pain kills without a prescription.

I had dental surgery complete with sedation on Monday, and my back was an angel for 24 h. Then the pain came back and now we're back to status quo. Maybe I should phone the dentist and ask for a permanent IV???

This thing is getting really old...

From a Consumer Reports mattress survey:

"Respondents who bought Tempur-Pedic, Original Mattress Factory brand, and Select Comfort mattresses were much more satisfied than those who bought Spring Air and Stearns & Foster models. They were significantly more likely to say they would definitely buy those brands again."

"The top-ranked seller, The Original Mattress Factory, was a standout for both service and selection. Costco was also highly rated, even though it (and Sam's Club) earned the lowest scores for service and selection. Across the board, Costco had a slight edge over Sam's Club. It earned its high rating on the strength of its low prices. Eighty-nine percent of those surveyed said mattress prices at Costco were very good or excellent (84 percent gave similar praise to Sam's prices). Overall, readers had few gripes; 70 percent said the transaction went smoothly."

The free-online article is just an overview, not the entire article. It mentions "problem sleepers", but not the specific issue of back pain.

It didn't do my back any good, but my head demanded that I take a walk in the park. I just couldn't take in any more. Anyway, I put on a ThermaCare HeatWrap and went for a two mile walk in the park. (I usually walk five miles.) I was sore before the walk, and sore afterwards, so I guess it doesn't make any difference.

In spite of all the dire warnings on the ThermCare HeatWrap package, I didn't burst into flames or anything.Smiler

That's too long, but at least the odds are on our sides, knock on wood.

Yeah...PROVIDED...
I'm having a slightly better day, but I still hate, hate, hate this thing!

Ahh. That felt good. Smiler

Puck-So sorry to hear your back is feeling bad. I hope you find some relief soon.

My back (knock wood) has been good.

I'm really sore today. I've been walking and doing some exercises, but can't really tell if they're good or bad in terms of pain relief. Sometimes I have periods of very little pain, but right now I have no idea what to do about this. I do PT with an OMT therapist, but even though I can see some improvement, I get so discouraged when the pain returns. It's been more than a month.

How are everyone's backs doing?

I'm sore right now, but sometimes have a brief pain-free period.

I have toyed around with doing slow/gentle cat-camel exercises, but worry that it might actually cause some soreness. I "dunno".

Here are the previously mentioned Dr. McGill exercises directly from the source, including photos (8 pages):

"Enhancing Low Back Health through stabilization exercise"

Here is the previously posted Men's Health version of the exercises.

The former article has more technical details, and the latter article has better "how to" information.
