This is Steph's homework, I'm just cutting a pasting as she is having some computer problems.

I am sure everyone remembers the show "Ally McBeal". I know I am in the minority, but I really did not enjoy it that much. I did happen to see part of one episode because Tracy Ullman, who is one of my favorite comedians, was on as Ally's therapist. She was asking Ally what her theme song in life was. It was VERY cute and I always remember this because I love music so much. So today I ask you: do you have a theme song or mantra?

Steph

ooooooo one of my favorite subjects - music.

I'm going to go back and turn my homework in late - I may not get credit, but I'll still gain the information.

To answer this question, I went through my list on iTunes. I have so many favorites and pieces that speak to me. What I came up with include:

It's not where you start, it's where you finish

The Best is Yet to Come

But probably the closest to home: I won't grow up (from Peter Pan)

Music for me is determined by my mood, but if I had to pick a life theme song, I'd pick Gloria Gaynor's I will survive, too.

And I didn't like Ally McBeal either.

Life is like a roller coaster, with lots of ups and downs, but the curves, spirals, loops and corkscrews are what make life interesting.

The 3 songs in my head the most often lately:

Sugarland's Just Might (make me believe)

Duran Duran's (Reach up for the) Sunrise

Holly Dunn's Daddy's Hands

Ok and I have to fess up to a fourth one, my dad wanted played and now its stuck in my head and won't go away... In heaven there is no beer... I don't know who sings it, and I only know a few words that just keep playing over and over again. I hate it when that happens. Roll Eyes

And the recording on the web was played by professional studio musicians or university music majors or something.

The version of my head is played by 4th graders.. WAY out of tune and with every note sort of grunted out... Smiler

What ever band arrangement my class is playing becomes my ear-worm of the year.

This year it is "Dragon Slayer".

(You can go to www.jwpepper.com and search Dragon Slayer, if you want to hear what is going on in my head.)

I'm having a hard time with this because what's playing in my head changes so frequently based on my mood.

When I'm particularly in a bad place I'll often here Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive playing.

Right now, I'm pumped to be back into a full, heavy workout so most of the time I hear some peppy dance hall music type stuff ; )

I have two, OK three. One is "Have a Nice Day" Bon Jovi. The second is Steven Curtis Chapman's "This Day", I am listening to right now!! Third is Jo Dee Messina "Delicious Surprise".If I won me the lottery
I'd dance naked in the street
With a top hat full of money
And you'd wanna get to know me
If I won me the lottery

And if I was a movie star
I'd sip honey from a pickle jar
In the back of my limousine
They'd call me an icon
And I'd be lookin' back at you
From the cover of the people magazine

Bridge: I guess it's all for the takin'
I guess it's all yours and mine
My sister says I got to see it and believe it

Chorus: I believe it
I believe it

If I am just an outside
I'm livin' in a trailor with a black and white tv set
If only I was president, yah
You know I'd paint the white house pink
And never have to pay the rent
If only I was president

Bridge: I guess it's all there for the takin'
I think it's all yours and mine
My preacher says I've got to see it and believe it

Chorus: I believe
I won't sleep 'til I've had enough
I believe
Won't sip my wine from no paper cup
I believe
Won't sleep 'til I've had enough
Until I've had enough

Delicious surprise
Now I do believe
Now it's there all the time
Inside I knew it all the time

Got me somethin' to believe in
But all I really want now is
A handful of salvation

Repeat chorus (2 times) (out)

Yesterday the sky was bright and clear
I could see the sun and I could hear the song
Faith flowed like a river free and deep
And grace was not so hard to be believed
But that was yesterday
And what was close enough to touch
Now seems a world away
So what about this day

This day all His mercies are new
This day every promise is true
Father, help me to believe
Give me faith I need to know You
And trust You this day
This day

Who knows what tomorrow’s light will bring
Tears to cry or maybe songs to sing out loud
But only God can see that far away
And He made us for living day by day
‘Cause He wants us to see
That the God that He’s been every day of history
Is who He is this day

‘Cause You are the same yesterday and today and forever
Through every season Your truth and Your grace never change
Oh, Lord, I do believe that the God that You’ve been every day of history
Is who You are this day

This day…this day

This day Your mercies are new
This day Your promise is true
This day my hope is in You, Lord
This day
Great lyrics!!!!!!!

"I am what I am" from La Cage aux Folles. Big Grin

Sometimes "I'm just a girl who can't say no" from Oklahoma!

Or "Cock-eyed optimist" from South Pacific.

Or maybe "My Favorite things" from Sound of Music

Or "Spoonful of Sugar" from Mary Poppins.

I can't decide! They all play in my head, depending on my mood! Big Grin

I think that, at this point in my life, my theme song would be "Proud" by Heather Smalls (the theme song to the current season of The Biggest Loser). I swiped these lyrics off the web, so I'm not entirely sure they're accurate:

I look into the window of my mind
Reflections of the fears I know I've left behind
I step out of the ordinary
I can feel my soul ascending
I am on my way
Can't stop me now
And you can do the same

What have you done today to make you feel proud?
It's never too late to try
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
You could be so many people
If you make that break for freedom
What have you done today to make you feel proud?

Still so many answers I don't know
Realise that to question is how we grow
So I step out of the ordinary
I can feel my soul ascending
I am on my way
Can't stop me now
And you can do the same

What have you done today to make you feel proud?
It's never too late to try
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
You could be so many people
If you make that break for freedom
What have you done today to make you feel proud?

We need a change
Do it today
I can feel my spirit rising
We need a change
So do it today
'Cause I can see a clear horizon

What have you done today to make you feel proud?
So what have you done today to make you feel proud?
'Cause you could be so many people
If you make that break for freedom
So what have you done today to make you feel proud?
What have you done today to make you feel proud?
What have you done today
You could be so many people?
Just make that break for freedom
So what have you done today to make you feel proud?

Heh ... that's funny (I didn't think it was at the time), but when I was in the middle of a serious depression, my mom (an avid Ally McBeal fan) suggested I just needed a theme song. :c |

When I'm feeling a little melancholy, but still defiant, it's Deacon Blues, by Steely Dan.

When I'm feeling more confident, it's I Am That I Am, by Peter Tosh:

I'm not in this world
To live up to your expectations
Neither are you here to live up to mine, yeah

I don't owe no one
No obligation
No one owe me none,
So everything is fine, fine

I said I am that I am
I am I am I am
I said I am that I am
I am I am I am
I said I am that I am
I am I am I am
I said I am that I am
I am I am I am

Don't underestimate
My ability
Don't defamate my character
Don't belittle
My authority
It is time you recognized my quality

[CHORUS]

Learn to love
To love your brother
Don't covet your neighbor

Flee from the city
It's getting shitty
It is full of inequity

[CHORUS]

I am the rock of the ages
You cannot move I at all
I am the son of lightning
You cannot move I at all
Son of Jacob
Cannot move me at all
I am the son of Moses
You can't move I at all
I am the son of David
You cannot move I at all

I am a firm ripe diamond
You cannot move I at all
You could a shed more tears
You cannot move I at all

You could a full of evil
You cannot move I at all
You could a try more nuttin'
You cannot move I at all

And you can try make a something
That can't move I at all
And could a come with -ism
You can't move I at all

And could come with schism
That can't move I at all

I never cared for that show either but dd loved it.
Several songs come to mind:

Angels Among Us by Alabama
(chorus : )
(oh,) I Believe there are angels amoung us
sent down to us from some where up above
they come to you and me in our darkest hours
to show us how to live,
to teach us how to give
to guide us with a light of love

Don't Laugh At Me by Mark Wills
Chorus:
Don’t laugh at me, don’t call me names
Don’t get your pleasure from my pain
In God’s eyes we’re all the same
Someday we’ll all have perfect wings
Don’t laugh at me
I’m fat, I’m thin, I’m short, I’m tall, I’m deaf, I’m blind, Hey, aren’t we all
Don't laugh at me

And then there is a song by Reba called
"Is There Life Out There". The song doesn't really give this impression but the music video that goes with the song shows a wife and mother who is struggling to go back to college while still being a good wife and mother. There was also a made-for-tv movie made from this song. It was my favorite song while I was going to night school to get my Associates Degree.
