I know what you mean . That is why I do the Body Fat Test at the Y. It periodically tells me "Yes, the scales may show you have only lost 2 lbs in the last 4 months, but you really lost 6lbs of fat and gained 4 lbs of lean muscle weight."
I'm hoping that the Body Water Percentage function will periodically "save me" by saying "You didn't really gain weight". You're just retaining water."
Among other things, I wanted another Tanita, to preserve the "statistical purity" of my weight spreadsheet, which goes back to 2004.
I found out that Tanita USA has their own sales web site, so I am going to try buying directly from them.
I'm just going to get another one of their simple Body Fat Percentage scales. The replacement for my old model throws in Body Water Percentage, which should be interesting.
My local REI store has a fancy Tanita-Ironman model, but it's overkill for my needs, and less convenient than a simple model. Besides, the fancy model is said to include a Physique Rating. There are some things that a person is better off NOT knowing.
We have the same electronic scale in our bathroom (Denise-our bathroom is super-humid as we do not have an exhaust fan so I'm not sure humidity is a big factor) for about 7 or 8 years now. The only thing I know about the accuracy of my scale is that dd has weighed herself on that scale and then gets weighed at the doctor on one of those old balance scales and she is always about 7 lbs. less at the doctor. I don't deduct 7 lbs from my weight on the home scale based on this but somewhere in my mind I want to believe it IS true
We have a "Thinner" brand scale. I think it is at least 5 years old, maybe more. We keep it in a corner of the kitchen. The kitchen is the only place in the house that is not carpeted. It weighs 2 or 3 lbs lighter than the scales at the Y.
Scale #1 got very inaccurate. It wasn't electronic or digital. It was the old fashioned kind. It gave me a number that was about 10 lbs less than I really weighed (I liked that scale a lot!) I blame the humidity and something (like rust?) getting gunked up inside the scale.
Scale #2 didn't last too long as it drown in a toilet flooding accident.
Scale #3 Is the one I have now. Same battery. Been 6-7 years. I have a "Thinner" Brand. Weighs to the half pound and is consistent with the scale at WW'ers. Was $23 or something.
I don't keep it in the bathroom. I don't think that the scales like the humidity. And the flooding accident really convinced me to keep it else where.

My Tanita is still going...I can't remember for sure when I bought it, but I'd say it's been at least 5 years...probably a few years longer. I weigh once per day.

I think I have had mine (also a Taniata) for about 6 years. I use it fairly frequently. Some weeks I use it 20-30 times. Other weeks I use it only 2-3 times.
OH--- I thought you were talking about food scales-- not people scales---
