At first she turned it down (even though she really really wanted it) because they have a min-van & she will have to drive on the freeway. The lady at the nanny agency talked her into accepting it.
She has never driven anything bigger than our Saturn and the difference in size between that and a mini-van is huge but she can learn that more easily than she can driving on the freeway. She has driven on the freeway a few times but it makes her a nervous wreck. It has never really been necessary for getting around to the places we go on a regular basis. She does need to do it more, I just wish she wasn't learning it in a large vehicle she is not used to and with 2 little ones in the van with her.
She will be going from $8 phr to chase 20-25 3yo kids to a little over $11 phr to watch 1 2 year old and a 6mo old. The 2yo goes to pre-school 2 or 3 days a week for half a day.
Great!!! Glad to hear your DD got the job. As for the van she will sit up a little higher so she will get use to it quickly. I drove and extended van with no windows. I f I can do that she can drive it!!!

I think I remember that you are in Gwinnett. We are also. Most of our activities are centered around the Forum at the corner of Peachtree Corners & Peachtree Parkway and Gwinnett Mall along with Chamblee, Doraville & Norcross so we never have to use the freeway for anything. You can even get to the Mall of Georgia or Gainesville Ga by going up Peachtree Ind. or Buford Hwy. She went to college in Gainesville.
Congratulations to your daughter on her new job I never thought I would drive a van..but I love it. I do understand not wanting to drive on I-285, I live just outside Atlanta and have never driven on it!
One day at a time!

Congrat to BMom's DD!!! I know how she feels about the driving part though, I don't like to get out of my "comfort" zone on the highway's either.
I will say this though. She might actually like the mini-van better when she gets more used to it. I had always driven cars until I got a blazer and then I moved up to a Tahoe. Now when I get into a car, I feel like I'm sitting down on the road.
We have done some "practice" driving on the freeway in the past but not much and not on I-285 which is 6 or 7 lanes wide in some places and sometimes has 2 or 3 exit only lanes so you can't just stay in the far right lane. It is a live-in position so she will not be coming and going to work everyday but she will have to take the boy to pre-school and pick him up 2 or 3 days a week and take them to the children's museam(sp?), zoo, aquariam, play dates, etc. She will have to give up her apartment so I am also losing my weekend retreat . We plan to give a lot of stuff to the Katrina relief effort for setting up their homes. They can use the furniture and kitchen stuff and that way we don't have to store it. It is mostly college stuff and she hopes to be able to afford something better by the time she gets another place of her own.
Congratulations to her Judy!! I am sure she will make a wonderful and nurturing Nanny to those children. Can she make some practice drives back and forth to the new destination so that when the time comes, she won't be so nervous.
I hate driving on the interstate too, but if it is a route I have traveled before, I feel much better doing it.

Judy, I'm thrilled to hear this. The extra $ and the different type of work will be great for her and she'll be an old hand at the driving before she knows it. Can she get out on the freeway in her car several times before she starts her new job? I'm sure that would help.
Congratulations on your dd getting the nanny job *S* She'll get used to the mini van in no time and taking it out on the freeway. I remember the first time I drove on the freeway in Atlanta. Scared the tar out of me...lol. Hope she enjoys her new little munchkins *S*
