As everyone knows, or will know, I have beagles that I treat like my children. I also have children that are at college and love care packages. My son told me he is sick of peanut butter cookies, so I have made him some chocolate brownies. Packed them up...put them on the HIGH counter, came home last night, my two little guys had colaborated and opened the box, fortunately, they didn't have time to get inside the tupperware container. Today, I was gone 10 minutes and came home to a ripped open box and over 3/4 of the brownies eaten by my baby beagle -- four years old! %*&D@!!!!! I am sick! Not because the brownies are ruined, but because chocolate is BAD news for dogs and I am sick, I am worried sick I will loose this one. I can't bare it, called the vet, watch for diarehha...why is there a haha in that word! I find nothing funny about it. I was hysterical; and I mean hysterical. I tossed the remainder of the brownies in the trash outside, and now am waiting for the flood of "whatever" to happen. I am just praying that his constitution is strong enough to endure this flood of caffiene he is going to get.
So, I am having one "H" of a day, and it's not 9:00 AM yet. I am feeling very picked on, down and like giving up. But that's not my style. After my nerves are done spasing, I will love him up, hope for the best in the bathroom area. And then write my poor son to say the brownies will be mailed on Monday!
What is this dog trying to tell me, he's on a diet, needs to loose 15 pounds, but killing yourself isn't worth it. I need a doggie therapist, anyone know a good one? For me or for him.

so glad to hear that pup is doing fine.... not alot of people realize there are many foods that dogs shouldn't eat. My sister in laws dog at a 5 lb batch of fudge on Christmas eve, she called me in a panic and I told her to call the vet IMMEDIATELY. Vet told her to give him peroxide to make him vomit... luckily (many fudge piles later) he is fine.
Onions are another one that dogs should not be fed, something to do with thinning their blood I do believe.
I own a boxer - and he can not eat anything remotely HUMAN in the way of food. Once he got into the garbage after a chicken dinner day.... needless to say for 3 days --I was afraid to enter my house in fear of what was going to greet me.
It's amazing what animals can get into. We have two kittes. One is so picky, she only eats her dry food (hates moist food), will only eat treats out of the bowl and the only people food she likes is ice cream (but it must be Bryers, she turns her nose up at anything less!! UGH). THe other one, however, is like a garbage can. She'll eat anything and everything - her favorite being cheese - you should see her go crazy when I open a string cheese. But the one that freaked me out was when I caught her walking across the stove going after a HOT pan of taco meat (she loves the stuff)....She came very close to burning her paws....after that, double face tape is on the edge of all of our counters (cats hate it if they step on it...).
Glad Cobi is fine!!

What a story! I have 3 cats I love and they surprise me sometimes with what they get into. Cookies, bread, etc. My all time mess was with my first cat who pulled a turkey carcass from the garbage and dragged it all over my just scrubbed kitchen floor trying to get every last little bit of turkey off the bones.
I am happy to report that Cobi is fine, has been up to his old tricks today....driving his 7 year old basset bro nuts! and barking at everyone going to the rummage sale across the street.
Remade the brownies, packed them, put the in the car and mailed them within two hours. Hopefully they arrive well.
We have contacted the US Gov't about enrolling Cobi as a "food dog" for the states that have laws against bringing in food to other states. We should hear soon. And to think he has to loose 15 lbs in one year....this isn't the way to do it! Maybe KD's next book should be for the canine's in our lives.

Fortunately, they were the tiny ones that come in like Daisy razors. They tell me the acid in a beagle/bassets stomach will digest that, but when you see it go down, it's hard to believe.

What a beautiful boy! The vet called today and told me that beagles/bassets in particular had intestinal tracts that can tolerate just about anything. At that moment, Cobi lost his cookies ( or should I say his brownies) for the third time. So much for strong intestinal fortitude.

Glad that he was OK. Sorry about your carpets! I guess from now on you'll have to mail the cookies right away! Your dog's adventures would be funny if they weren't a little disturbing -- razor blades? Yikes!
Our kitties are little clowns too and they always make me happy. Glad to hear that your puppy is back to his old tricks and feeling better.

I'm so glad to hear Cobi is doing well. I was going to post before that I thought he was fine, but I googled dogs and chocolate first...I didn't realize how horribly toxic it was for them! I knew it was bad, but not how bad. So rather than posting I sort of sat around worried silly for your pooch.
And now that we know he's going to be fine, here's another dog eats chocolate story:
Years ago my parent's Husky got into the Halloween candy. They had bought the candy at a Warehouse Club--pooch ate 3 pounds of peanut butter cups. They came home to find their light beige carpets polka-dotted with brown smears. He had taken the PBcups one at a time to different spots, and held the package down with one paw while tearing it open, thereby leaving a smear of chocolate to mark each little sin. Poor pup had a few uncomfortable days, but since it was more sugary peanut butter than chocolate he survived to plague us with idiocy (nickname: Meathead) for another decade.
I had no idea how seriously he could have been hurt, though. From now on the chocolate in my home is staying in the upper cabinets.

I almost cried when we flushed the last goldfish... we had them a REALLY long time. These fish actually had personalities. dh accidently killed them. Washed their tank with bubble bath and didn't rinse well enough. He felt awful. But the fish were an incredible bargin. 7 cents each and not one vet bill in 8 years.
dh had a co-worker with a huge giant tank and an eel. He called in and couldn't come into work the day his eel died (or maybe it was just sick...) Told dh all the tricks the fish could do. dh was sort of blown away that someone would take a personal day for their pet fish... The wire for the heater had fallen in the tank and the fish had chewed it and zapped himself.

Our dog, too. He didn't even get sick.
I didn't know that chocolate was bad for dogs until I was about 40. Was on our 3 dog. They all lived a long time - and all accidently ate some coco.
You guys made me laugh and that's what I needed today! Cobi has a death wish, we've always known that, either a death wish or suicidal tendencies. He has had third degree burns from jumping at the counter and spilling hot ham juice on him, eating razor blades, chicken bones, that one required surgery, and all kinds of various other things. It's amazing he is alive. But he is the most loveable animal. He was hiding in the bathroom when I got home, as I am screaming for him, and I mean SCREAMING, he comes meekly out of the bathroom, tail between his legs looking like drunken sailor. The vet told me to watch him for lethargy and yes, he would either throw it up or poop it out...so far my poor dh came home to the thrown up stuff in the hallway....cleaning carpets tomorrow. His big bro, wouldn't come down stairs until noon, cause "mom" was mad, but, then he decided to go into his puppy routine....of stealing shoes out of the basket. Anything to make me laugh.
I keep saying next time I come into this world I am raising puppies not kids. But now, after today I don't know maybe goldfish that you flush when the die and I wouldn't get that attached to.
thanks again, I think I will be fine...and so will Cobi. NO MORE BROWNIES for him!

Sending good thoughts to you and pup. Hope he is doing okay in the aftermath of the brownies and that you are doing better, too.
A coworker made a cake to bring in to the office this week for a birthday and, when she went to get it from the counter to leave from work, she found it was 3/4 gone...the dog had chowed down on it. I don't know what flavor the cake was, but her dog is fine. I hope the same for you and yours.

My dog once ate all of our Easter candy-mostly chocolate- lots of it between 4 kids. He was fine. We had no idea chocoalte was bad for dogs. The most difficult part was that our choclate was gone. He might show no adverse effects- like my dog. Hoping that everything is ok.
Our beagle/basset ate an entire Xmas stocking once. Ate all the candy AND the wrappers. Pooped it all out... wrappers and all. This was about 10 years ago. He's about 16 yo now and still in pretty good health.
The dog has one neuron that fires... and it drives his nose.
dh says that the dog is still alive because he can't bare the thought of dying and missing dinner.
Keep in mind that diarrhea is a potentially life-threatening condition that requires prompt treatment. After a short bout, my Shetland Sheepdog required an IV. One part of his treatment was fasting. (He had "bacterial food poisoning".)

I can relate to how you feel...on Easter, our minature doberman pincher got hold of a chocolate bunny while we where gone for lunch...we came home to a house filled with puke in every room!!!! we didnt know why but it smelled like chocolate...later we discovered that my son had eaten half of his and hid the rest...guess who found it??!! we called the vet and no answer so we called the animal hospital..they asked what kind of chocolate..we said..milk..they lady said good...he will survive..he will have diahreahh and puke some more but he will live...if it had been dark chocolate..it probably would have killed him.
