I want to plan a romantic getaway for my husband and I over New Year's weekend, but we don't have a lot of spare money. We will be driving to New York for a whirlwind Christmas the weekend before, so I don't want it to be too hectic. Just spending time together, preferable some outdoors stuff in there too. Between now and then, we will be seeing family almost constantly. I know we will want time alone. Any suggestions?

If Southwest flies out of a convienient airport for you, check out their vacation packages. Totally honestly, DisneyWorld is a lot of fun when you're grown up, and it's great walking-around weather down here during Dec/Jan/Feb. Just watch out for the snowbirds Big Grin

And Southwest has other vacation packages as well. I'd be up for playing tourist in DC, though, staying in a nice hotel near all the federal buildings. I get to see the beach anytime I want, though, so a city vacation seems more fun than a beach vacation to me.

Have a great time, whatever you decide!

I would suggest Rehoboth Beach (DE) if, like me, you enjoy the beach off season. You could get an ocean front hotel room at the Boardwalk Plaza or Atlantic Sands and the town usually has a big Christmas tree right on the boardwalk at the center of town. It's so cozy and quaint.

The Boardwalk Plaza is a Victorian-style hotel and can be VERY pricy, but you might be able to get a deal off season, though many hotels boost prices over New Years. Whatever you do, make a decision soon and make reservations ASAP.

I love going to the zoo in the winter. Not very expensive and lots of walking.

How about going skiing for the day (downhill or cross country)?

You could also take a drive to Delaware and go to Longwood Gardens (they decorate beautifully for the holidays).

That detour would be great... unfortunately I have to work the week in between.

How do I research places to stay and things to do? Any good websites? I'm used to orbitz for all of your plane and hotel needs - but I'd prefer a B&B or a cabin. I'd like to try cross country skiing. I think mountains would be most exciting around New Years. The water would be a bit brisk I think.

Oh I didn't even mention all the in town stuff you could do.

You could play tourist for a day and check out all the museums.

The Corcoran used to have Gospel brunch on Sundays. I don't know if they still do that.

Also check and see if the ice rink at the sculpture garden is open yet.

There's tabletop smores at Cosi.

Lots of free or nearly free events, films, and lectures at the Library or Congress, universities, art galleries, and several of the embassies.

Go on a photo safari ... Glen Echo Park is a good destination.

The boathouses in G'town rent out kayaks and canoes too. And the Rock Creek trail is right there for biking.

Pick up the City Paper and have a gander, also on Thursdays there's a chat on the Washington Post all about going out. Those guys can probably offer some good ideas.

Skiing (PA and WV are nearby spots)?
Rent a cabin?
Whale watching?
Tour Virginia's vineyards and spend the night in a B&B?
Hike some of the AT?

Visit Shepherdstown? There's a thriving folk music scene there.

Even Charlottesville could be cool. Get a hotel room and check out Monticello and a winery, and maybe catch some theatre or a concert on the UVA campus or a lil small scale live music at a cafe.

Many places on the Eastern shore and Rehoboth are cheaper in the off season, and not TOO far of a drive. Even Annapolis would be a cool little getaway.

I'll keep thinking on it ...
