Denise Austin's Burn Fast Fast offers a warmup, cardio dance workout, strength workout and a cooldown. The warm & cool are each about 5 minutes and the cardio & strength are each about 20 minutes.

Warmup: This is a cardio-style warmup to get your heart rate up--marching, side-stepping, squats, lunges--but also includes some stretches.

Cardio Workout: Denise calls this her "cardio house party" since it has some dancey moves in it such as the mambo and cha-cha. It felt like a bit of a Turbo Jam copy in that she's working overtime to make it FUN! There's even one move she almost called "shake & shed," which is one of Chalene's signature Turbo Jam moves. She tries for the "let's just have fun with the music" moves that Chalene uses in Turbo Jam, but I didn't find this nearly as much fun. In fact, sometimes I just felt embarassed, such as in one move where you alternate kicks with wiggling your butt in the way a 3-year old girl does when she's learning to dance.

Strength: Pretty basic strength moves with dumbbells but she also combines upper body strength moves with lower body squats, lunges and plies so you get a lower body benefit as well. There is some floor work for chest, buns and abs. I didn't do this entire workout (floor work) but it is a good overall workout.

Cooldown: Pretty basic stretches.

Things I didn't like:
1. Denise feels the need to talk EVERY SECOND through every workout. Since so much of her talking feels forced and unnaturally perky (You can DO IT!), I wanted to throttle her within 5 minutes of every workout.

2. Like Kathy Smith, Denise uses the string-moves-together-then-put-it-all-together method, which I happen to hate because it's hard to remember all the moves and what order they come in when you don't have a great memory.

3. She's not very good at cueing. She'll say "Okay, now we're going to do something different!" but she doesn't say WHAT until you're already doing it. Or she'll say "Now we're going to do the _____" and use some name for a move I've never heard of before, so I don't consider that cueing. When she starts putting moves together in a different sequence than I'd learned them, it was confusing.

4. Her voice annoys me to no end. It's like someone with a high voice trying to talk in an unnaturally low, breathy, sex-kitten voice.

5. When Denise marches in places, she doesn't have her knees pointing forward like everyone else in the video (and just about everyone else in other workouts I've done). She points her knees inward as she walks which causes her hips to swivel dramatically. She looks like a majorette leading a marching band instead of a fitness trainer leading a workout.

Clearly I'm not a Denise Austin fan. I've tried 2 of her workouts now and I find HER so obnoxious that it's hard for me to see through that to the benefits of her workouts. So take all of this review with a grain of salt.

Personal Healthy Habits Challenge - 10/1 to 12/31/08:
1. Exercise: Get back to consistently working out 3-5 X week.
2. Food: Get back to consistently preparing healthy lunches for the week with increased veg servings.
3. Behavior: Reduce intake of sweets.
