My 15 lb. Shitzu ate about 3 oz. of milk chocolate sometime this morning. He seems fine, a little on the hyper side, but no vomiting, diarrhea, etc. He has been running around a little more than usual. It has been about 10 hours since this happened. Would he be showing signs of toxicity by now? I have been reading online and for milk chocolate, the sites say he would need to have ingested 1 oz. of chocolate for each lb. of body weight to be toxic but I'm still worried. The entire package of chocolate is 3.6 oz. It was not a full package so I'm over-estimating by saying 3 oz. Has anyone had a dog that ate chocolate and what happened? I know our Bichon ate about 10 Hershey Kisses two years ago because someone (and by someone I mean me Frowner) left a dish of Christmas candy on the coffee table. I came down to the living room seeing bright colored wrappers from one end of the room to the next. I called the vet and they said he would be fine, that he may experience some diarrhea but he never did. I guess the hyper-activity that Simon is showing worries me because that is one of the symptoms but I would think that after almost 10, maybe even 12 hours that he would be exhibiting some stomach distress if he was toxic. I hope he's okay. I worry about my dogs like they are children!

OMG! I thought I had the only dog who will eat anything is seconds flat!

I have the same poison control number on my frig because Cobi is famous for swiping anything that will fit in his mouth, and I found out the "human" equation of Poison Control won't help you out.

There is a doggie MD site also, that gives you all kinds of home remedies for dogs and cats that eat things they shouldn't.....my vet even has a print out of their information.

We had a cocker Spaniel in Egypt who ate tons of chocolate. She ate my entire Easter basket one year, she ate my sister's birthday feast another...we had to lock her up for Easter Egg hunts because she'd go after the chocolate...

Thanks Denise and Sheltieguy. Simon finally laid down and is sleeping! He is a bit hyper by nature, but was super active tonight. I cut his hair around his face earlier because the dogs are overdue for the groomer and he had a self-made "visor" thing going on, hair in his eyes and it was almost impossible to keep him still! It is now definitely almost 12 hrs since he ate the chocolate so I think he's fine. I will post that poison control website/number on my fridge just in case. Simon has an affinity for all things non-edible. Like shoes, plastic, carpet, our other dog, LOL!! He's so bad, he's lucky he's so cute!

Jill

PS: If anyone can teach me how to post a picture here I'll post one of Simon. He looks like an Ewok from Star Wars, minus the nasty looking teeth and the orange hood!

Our dog was about 40 lbs... beagle/basset mix.

One year, he ripped an xmas stocking down in the middle of the night and ate all the candy... wrappers and all.

Santa started leaving the stocking on the kitchen counter... next to the cookies and milk. However, another year, he found the candy in the bottom of a closet before Santa had a chance to put it out.

Another time, he tore up my mil's sweater, to get one of her calcium chocolate chew "candies" that she left in the pocket.

Also ripped the pocket of dh's shirt for a stick of gum.

He never even got an upset stomach or the runs or anything... I can't even say that he was more hyper or anything after eating chocolate... He was more hyper trying to get at it... although the wrappers in his poo was kind of gross for a couple of days.

He lived to be 18. Smiler

I'd never feed a dog choc on purpose... but the amounts he ate didn't seem to bother him. I never even called the vet.

I'm not sure HOW much a dog would have to eat to show signs of poisoning... I suppose that it might depend on the dog.

If you want a second opinion, the phone number for (not free) Pet Poison Helpline is here:

http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/

I have never (knock on wood) had to use the service, but keep the number on the fridge in case of emergency.
