I would like to get my mom some sort of fitness video..not cardio per say but something with some resistance training. She's in her 50's. She has complained about being sore and I know that with some cardio and resistance training that would help alleviate some if not a majority of that.
I would like to get her something that has some resistance training to help her build/tone her muscles. I'm planning on getting her some of those stretch bands because they are light weight and she can adjust the tension as opposed to dumbells.
Does anyone have any suggestions for videos o DVD for an older adult on resistance training or even a book? She may not be interested, but I want to give her that option.

Summer Se7en Challenge Goals
1. Binge control: no more than 2 times per week 2. Think positive and give credit for all the little successes 3. Go swimming
Typically, I have heard that for "older" folks they usually require diffent exercise requirements in the beginning at least to help prevent injury...vs. a young person in good health.
I'm glad you got a laugh... I hope you or anyone else wasn't offended. I'm not exactly young either.
Thanks for the response. I need to get out the door the gym they will be opening up in about 20 minutes.
more later.

Serene: I had to laugh, your mother is "older" in her 50's? I am in my 50's (53) and never thought of myself as older....what a hoot!
I have several Pilates for dummies that are resistance....one with 1 lb weights that is very low impact for us "old" ladies. And another one using bands that is great for toning and strengthening. I used those when I was rehabing my "old" shoulder. I think I got them at Target.
You are a wonderful "young" daugher to help your "old" mom. Bless your heart!
I am still hooting, now I am old. Oh my!

If you use the FIND feature here on the board and type the words "DVD Review" into the search box (without the quotation marks), you will find a lot of my reviews of exercise DVDs.
I'm probably close to your Mom's age (I'm going to be 53 in October) but I'm not sure we're at the same fitness level since I've been exercising 5-6 times a week for 2 years, so I'm not sure my recommendations would work for her.
The only one of my DVDs that uses the stretchy bands and is called "Walk Away the Pounds Express: Advanced Walk" and it's 3 miles. That is a great one for people of your Mom's age group because, unlike a lot of the exercise DVDs that use perfect-looking young model types, this DVD uses people from the 20s up to the 70s. In fact, I'd say half of the cast on this DVD is over 40, which is great motivation for those of us in that age range.
The other one that comes immediately to mind for someone of your Mom's age and fitness level is the Gaiam Beginner's Balance Ball workout. You just go to Target and get the Gaiam Beginner's Balance Ball Kit and it has the ball, the pump and the DVD or tape. Just be sure you buy the right ball for her height. The only thing else you'll need (at least I find it necessary) is a yoga mat (otherwise, I can't get enough resistance with my feet against the carpet to do the moves).
Unless your Mom is highly motivated to exercise and work on her body (and it doesn't sound like she is), I think that the Tamilee Webb "I Want That Body" DVD that I recommend here a lot would probably be too much for her. That could be something she could work up to, though, if she finds that she enjoys working out.
Hope that helps. Sheri
P.S. Like Sandy, I prefer to "try before I buy" since exercise DVDs are SO varied in quality and in their fit to my likes and dislikes. Where Sandy checks them out from the library, I use my Netflix subscription to rent them, just like any other movie. What I do is go on amazon and search exercise DVDs. When I find one that looks interesting, I read the customer reviews to see the pros and cons. If I decide to try it, I pop over to the netflix website and search for that DVD. If they have it, I put it on my queue to rent. If I like it after I've done it a few times, then I buy it. This has saved me a TON of money, because I've found that I REALLY dislike some of the most famous names in fitness.

Sheri has reviewed lots and lots of exercise DVD/videos. She might have some good suggestions. I sometimes check stuff out from the library, give them a try and see if they are a fit for me. Many libraries have a large fitness/exerise section.
