Here is a message chain where people can post off-topic computer stuff, if they so choose.

Yes, I have used speedtest.net numerous times, without any problems.
In addition, Norton/Symantec did some kind of scan of the site, and didn't find any problems.
speedtest.net Summary Norton Safe Web found no issues with this site. •Computer Threats: 0 •Identity Threats: 0 •Annoyance factors: 0
Total threats on this site: 0
I use Norton Internet Security 2010. When I used this site, it didn't trigger any malware warnings.
I appreciate your caution. The only reason that I tried the site was that it was mentioned by Washington Post tech columnist Rob Pegoraro.

Did you do the free test? I am very leary of downloading things to my computer unless I know the source.

Did you do the free test? I am very leary of downloading things to my computer unless I know the source. Dena downloaded something one time that ruined our computer and put it into an endless loop. My bil was able to fix it but only by deleting everything on it and restoring it back to the way it was when it was brand new. Of course, that was way before we had the Norton Anti-Virus that we use now.
I wimped out, and cancelled my Windows 7 upgrade order on Amazon.com.
Preinstalled operating systems Just Work, and I have no real complaints with Vista x64 SP2.
There's probably a 1% change that a Windows 7 upgrade would cause me some problem, but that is more than I am willing to take at this time. I'm just not in the mood to deal with computer problems.
As for people buying new computers, Windows 7 continues to get rave reviews.
I was in the library with my laptop when I saw your original message. I tried to respond at that time, but all I saw was the spinning circle of eternity.

In addition, with my old dial-up connection it took 1 hour and 21 minutes to download a particular file. With my new connection, it took 15 SECONDS to download the same file.
I don't know about the fiber-optic thing but I know I have been very frustrated with Comcast high-speed internet. It is as bad as the dropped calls with Verizon! You know all the commercials with the Verizon "network" people that follow Verizon users around? They are on vacation in my neighborhood! I get dropped calls all the time! And Comcast internet has been soooo slow lately. Only thing I can think of is-back to school, kids using the internet at schools and colleges, I don't know. But, when you are trying to work and have the equivalent of dial-up when you are paying for high-speed it drives me crazy!
I have no specific goal(s) right now. I am trying to find the spiritual side of myself that I lost somewhere along the way.

Never heard of that. Does it involve "dial-up"? If not, I might be interested. I hate my cable connection but at the moment that is the only non-dial up option I have. I have had dial-up and will NOT go back to that.
Oh!! There is a new service called Clear that is advertising here. Is that them?
Judy, you can't get Bellsouth DSL? We had that when we lived in GA. It may be AT&T now.

Nope, it's a genuine high-speed internet service. Here is a portion of a press release from my local telco:
"DENVER, April 24, 2008 — Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) today launched a new generation of fiber-optic Internet services that provide unprecedented speed, value and capabilities to residential and small-business customers. Qwest Connect® Quantum and Qwest Connect® Titanium – with connection speeds of up to 20 Mbps and 12 Mbps, respectively – are the latest Internet services powered by Qwest's ongoing fiber to the neighborhood (FTTN) network expansion. In a phased roll-out of Quantum and Titanium, Qwest is introducing the blazing-fast connection speeds in 23 of its top markets, as well as the best overall value for super high-speed Internet in its residential service territory."

Whee! My HP desktop computer now sounds like a computer, rather than like a defective food mixer, due to a video card recall. That's been bugging me since I first bought the computer, last December.
