We've made it home from the trip to Glacier. What a beautiful place- way beyond what words can describe.

The park is huge with so very much to do and see. We just barely scratched the surface. Our two favorite hikes were the one to Avalanche Lake and the one from Logan Pass to Hidden Lake.

Crowding was not bad. We hit the park first thing and we generally back at the hotel by 3 for swimming and down time. I did notice that things were getting far busier from Noon on. I prefer to avoid crowds, so our early hikes and visits worked well.

Hiking itself went very well. The three of us all did well and enjoyed the challenge without being overwhelmed with it. Mostly we did 5-6 mile hikes.

More later...

Peg,
Hungry Horse was charming. Did you see the Dam? Did you eat Huckleberry ice cream?

I think I promised pictures of my trip and I have finally taken the time to get my act together and got them on Flickr for anyone who is interested.

This link will take you to my favorite 20 or so if you are short on time:
Glacier Favs

This link will take you to all 114.

All of 'em

It is an amazingly beautiful place so if you get a chance to go, go for it!

Enjoy!

Forgot to mention that we really disliked the train. The trip took 27 hours. We had a family sleeper. My biggest complaint about the train is that it was dirty. Both ways were just yucky! The bathrooms were not clean and our sleeper as barely cleaned after the last passengers. Walking through coach I was totally grossed out. It smelled badly and there was food on the floors. (I happen to be a stickler for clean- if you are not so picky, it might seem acceptable.)

The sleeper plans include meals on the train. It was fun to sit in the dining car, eat and watch the world go by- literally! The food was somewhere between dinner food and airplane food. Not horrible, but not great. Not low fat. I was struck so frequently at the ways people eat. I know I am in a weird minority now with ultra low fat, but many, many passengers are biscuits, gravy, bacon and more --- I was taken back.

When I consider the fact that we could have flown for less $ and far less time, I wish we'd done that. However, it was an experience that the three of us did together and we did get another sense of the land and the country as we crossed MN, ND and MT. Plus, riding the train through Glacier was a beautiful and majestic introduction to the park.

Hope the transition back home won't be too crazy and this week goes smoothly.

Out of our beliefs are born deeds; out of our deeds we form habits; out of our habits grows our character; and on our character we build our destiny.
