Homework Potpourri - A Little of This and a Little of That

Since my homework last week was the deeper, more introspective type, I'm trying for something a bit lighter this week.

The first one may seem negative but, after a few incidents in my own life this week, I realized that sometimes I create too much stress for myself around what should be minor irritations. And I thought that, perhaps, if we could all vent about one thing that bugs us, maybe we could not only release a little stress but potentially see that we may be doing something that bugs other people! Smiler

Your homework is to respond to the following questions/statements:

1. Get one thing off your chest that people (in general) do that bugs you.

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.

4. One of the most powerful episodes of the TV show Starting Over was late last week, when a beautiful, accomplished woman with an absolutely wretched self-image (Niambi) was told by her life coach to write affirmations to improve her self-image. She then spoke and sang her affirmations in a recording studio and they were edited by the producer to breath-taking effect. We don’t have a recording studio, but we can always use a good affirmation. Either think of an affirmation that will help you in an area where you’re struggling lately or use this one (excerpted from Niambi’s recorded affirmations). Repeat whichever affirmation you choose at least once today and really put your heart into it.

I am infinitely successful. I am exquisite. And I am shining.

5. Extra Credit: Discuss how it felt to say the affirmation you either created or repeated in #4. That is, could you say it and mean it or did the negative self-talk encroach on your positive affirmation?

1. people who drive with a cellphone and hand glued to their ear.

2. This is tough...because I have been doing so hot, but if I have to pick one thing. I ate a heathly lunch and breakfast almost every day.

3. As much as I wanted to skip out on the gym this week sooo bad... I managed to go..and after I got there I was fine.

4. I am a strong, beautiful and sexy woman.

They don't read signs then feel the need to ask me the question relating to the sign they just walked past.

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning.

I only ate out 1 time this week & packed lunch & dinner every day this week. (No park food for me.)

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.

I found out I can easily climb an 8 foot ladder. And I'm still getting in extra exercise despite the 20-25 min. hikes back & forth to my car every day.

4. I'm very smart, I do my job well, and I can and will adjust to whatever I need to do to avoid gaining a ton of weight working two jobs. I'm off to a great start!

Life is like a roller coaster, with lots of ups and downs, but the curves, spirals, loops and corkscrews are what make life interesting.

Rudeness

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning.
I had things in the freezer ready for lunches.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.
Since my back has been out it has been non-existent...but tonight my friend and I did a flat/slow walk...YEAH!

I am a thin person.

Negative self talk always seems to appear. I will continue doing this daily!

Kat

Goal:
Exercise at least 3 times per week.

Remember the positives.

yeah, Dawn, that's right.

Basically people suggest I eat the middles, but the problem is that it still has/gets crumbs in it.

Cate, I had to think about this for a minute to get what you meant...

At first I was like "If you're not going to eat the filling, are you just eating the bread or crust? What's the point?"

What you mean is that you don't eat sandwiches, pie, etc. now because you can't eat wheat, and so people are telling you to just eat the filling, right?

Public conversations on cell phones that should be kept private.

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning.

I went to the Farmers' Market today for lunch. Got a delicious turkey sandwich, some peaches, carrots and cilantro. With the beets I have at home, I'm thinkin' a beet and carrot slaw for dinner with fruit for dessert.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.

I got back on my bike again!

I've been eating breakfast and lunch. I managed to find something at the conference to eat as well.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.

I went swimming Monday and today. Even though today I spent more time in the hot tub/sauna because I feel chilled.

It feels good. I need to keep saying things like that to myself because I do tend to have moments when I feel completely negative, and feel like I will never, ever, ever find a nice man.

Clients that contact you so much about when their work is going to be done, that you can't get the work done. You really don't need to send a fax, then send an email about the fax and then follow-up the fax and the email with a phone call.

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning.

I have eaten homemade lunch twice this week.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.

I walked one day this week at lunch. Yesterday I came to work late, so I couldn't and today I had a seminar, but I should be able to walk tomorrow.

Lose things! I've had to make an number of extra trips to my builder's office because the old office manager misfiled or flat out threw away paperwork.

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning.

I've been doing a good job of staying under 1300 calories, even when things have gotten more stressful.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.

I've woken up at 5:45 am the past two days to workout because I couldn't fit it in later in the day.

I'm not so good at positive affirmations either but I'll give it a try....

I'm healthy, I'm strong, I look sexy : )

It doesn't feel natural saying it but I like it!

No time right now!

Going to try Asian Salad at McDonalds during bus stop tomorrow.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.
I've been doing it!

I've found it REALLY helpful to stop the NEGATIVE self talk. Even if I can't remember to do a positive affirmation... it really helped not to curse at myself or beat myself up.

There is a good article on affirmations on the WW site.

Talking during a performance-my dd's orchestra concert was last night and there are always parent(who should know better) gabbing through the whole thing!

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning.
I realized this week that after a particularly unclean meal/snack I don't want to keep eating that way. I actually look forward to getting back to clean foods. And, I am noticing I am full and satisfied w/less food.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.
This is a tough one for me, but I did take advantage of my urge to move yesterday and did 15 min of The Firm.

It feels weird to say that to myself and I don't actually believe those things but I do think that over time repeatedly saying that will help me to believe it is true.

Summer Challenge Goals:
1) Walk 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week
2) Plan weekly menus

1. Get one thing off your chest that people (in general) do that bugs you.

Tell you how much weight you've lost, even though they barely know you, rarely see you and really have no idea. They just assume that since you are large you want people to tell you you look like you've lost for lack of anything better. Why not just ask about the weather?

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning.

I am on my second week of planning my meals a week at a time. Its helping. My grocery bill is down and so is my weight.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.

Actually the past two weeks, going into this one I have done at least three 30 minute or longer of cardio.

4. Unfortunately affirmations is something I really am not good at coming up with or following through with.

Get one thing off your chest that people (in general) do that bugs you. People are so quick to judge by clothing, color, ethnicity, whatever they choose people who are different than they. I am finding (sadly) after I became disabled that this is so true especially for the disabled. By looking at me, you would never know that I have a major disability, I can walk, talk, move my arms, etc but am totally unable to work. People "assume" that I am milking the system, but have no clue as to what I can or can't do...they just see the disabiled sticker in my car, or hear that I am disabled and make references. GRRRRR

2. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your eating or food planning. I have eaten more fruit and vegetables this week than many before, it is coming into my favorite season when the grocery store produce aisles are filled with wonderful treats.

3. Tell us one thing you feel positively about this week in terms of your exercise or activity.
I have completed the first phase of my physical therapy program. My stretching and movement is better, although not perfect...but I am always looking for better.

4. One of the most powerful episodes of the TV show Starting Over was late last week, when a beautiful, accomplished woman with an absolutely wretched self-image (Niambi) was told by her life coach to write affirmations to improve her self-image. I am a talented, vibrant, healthy woman. I need no one to tell me how to treat my own body..it is my gift from God to love and cherish as I see fit.

5. Extra Credit: Discuss how it felt to say the affirmation you either created or repeated in #4. That is, could you say it and mean it or did the negative self-talk encroach on your positive affirmation? Yesterday, I spent an hour with my doc/cnp who told me how unhealthy some of my choices were. I was choosing NOT to do some of the things that she was suggesting and writing up orders for. I left feeling that my health and life were at risk...which they are not! I am the healthiest I have ever been. I need to tell myself, that deep within my soul, I know what is best for me, and for my body....I am it's keeper, I am ultimately responsible for those choices and decisions. I say those words with complete belief and conviction...no hesitations...well not many.

It's never too late to get it right.

1. My vent: Perfume/cologne is for dabbing or lightly spritzing, not for batheing! Being stuck in an elevator with you (or your perfume vapor trail after you've left the elevator) is not my idea of a good time!

2. I was proud that I chose a menu for this week that was very prep-heavy and followed through with every bit of it. Sometimes, when I make a plan that is prep-heavy, I end up leaving out some elements because I get too overwhelmed with how much time it's taking. This week, I stayed with the plan and got it all done (though it took the flychat Monday night to get through it all!).

3. I was really happy and proud that I exercised for 5 days consecutively (Saturday through Wednesday). This was notable for me because I have struggled a lot with exercise lately for some reason and I have felt SO strong and back on track after these 5 days.

4. I chose Niambi's affirmation and repeated it twice.

5. I have watched that portion of that Starting Over episode, where they play the tape of Niambi's recorded affirmations so beautifully blended together with her singing, and I have teared up every time. Even when I say those words myself, it feels emotional. The point at which I get emotional every time is on the word "exquisite" which I think is such a wonderful, lush and evocative word. I want to believe that I am exquisite and I am a lot closer to believing it than in most of my life, but still not all the way there.

Personal Healthy Habits Challenge - 10/1 to 12/31/08:
1. Exercise: Get back to consistently working out 3-5 X week.
2. Food: Get back to consistently preparing healthy lunches for the week with increased veg servings.
3. Behavior: Reduce intake of sweets.
