Hi there everyone!! Hope you all are doing well.

I have a couple of gardening project pics to post. This is something we are trying for the first time this year. I've read so much about other's trying this and we thought we would give it a go.

We have a little upside down garden. We planted 3 Better Boy tomato plants, 1 Roma, 1 Grape Tomato plant, 2 yellow crooked neck squash, 1 zucchini & 1 cucumber plant in 5 gallon buckets and hung them upside down. In theory, they are less likely to get diseases or a pest infestation because they are off the ground. No weeding either. No stakes. DH welded some poles to hang the buckets on at our cabin.

I also have 2 bush tomato plants in planters here at home. I have also planted some cilantro, italian flat leaf parsley & basil in planters as well.

These are pics when we first planted the buckets. They have all grown so much since then. Like I said, the buckets are at our cabin. The other planters are here at our home:

I am pretty excited because we have six, very small, very green tomatoes on our plants! I have never been able to grow much of anything so this, to me, is exciting!

I wish! Sandy, we didn't come up with the idea. I've known several folks who do this and if you do a "google" there are several sites on this type of gardening as well. Smiler

BTW, y'all should see my squash blooms today!!! I actually think the squash plants & cucumber plant are going to do better than the tomato plants.

Can you tell me in more detail how this works? How do you make the plants grow out of the bottom and not come out the top?

We drilled a hole in the bottom of each bucket & threaded the plant through. We also lined the bottom of the bucket w/newspaper, cut a small hole in the newspaper to stick the plant through. Fill the bucket with good soil and hang it up.

We planted tomatoes for the first time this year. Due to our chilly climate the seedlings are still on the window sills in boxes, and they're now three feet high and getting cramped! I have to transfer them to bigger pots, but not before our new windows come (our building is renewing all the window frames and installing triple glazing)...

Way cool! You'll have to let us know how your upside down crops end up : )
