This one had a 1/4 mi swim, 12 mi bike and 3.1 mi run. I was nervous because I had not really prepared for tris, focusing on my running instead. I left my watch at home and focused more on having fun and racing by feel.
I didn't finish with a terrific time, but I had a terrific time. And one of the other racers said, "I love how you try to make people smile" because I was cracking jokes during the run. I realized that no one but me is going to care what my time on the clock is -- some people won't be impressed no matter what I do, because I'm not one of the fastest triathletes. Some people are impressed that I can just do it.
For me, this was the first whole tri since my bummer of a race last year in Chicago, where the weather was cold and miserable and the race was just plain HARD. I didn't have much fun in that one. This race gave me a reminder of how much I do love the sport, which was exactly what I needed.

Kudos to you-I think it is awesome that you completed a triathlon, no matter what your time was!!! What an accomplishment to push yourself and know you can do it! Congrats! Jill

I'm just a tiny bit sore, as if I lifted weights yesterday. Not bad at all. I have a wall in my bedroom that has pictures from my races and my Danskin medals.

That was my seventh full race, and I also did the Danskin event earlier this year as part of a relay.

I think most of the races allow relay racers. Danskin does, and at yesterday's race there was a longer race and a sprint -- I think relays were allowed just for the longer race, not the one I did.
Sheri, usually I am very focused on my times, and I did have a moment of being disappointed that I didn't place better. I pushed myself the whole race, though, and I know I gave it my best effort. So even though it wasn't my fastest race ever, I'm happy with it.

Jen, for some people it is strictly competitive and it is all about who wins. The reality is that you win, not only because you are in the race but because of the spirit and attitude with which you entered and the wonderful rewards your body reaps!! I hope you always keep that same spirit and always enjoy what you do !!!

Congratulations on your tri! I am one of the people who are impressed that you can do it. I'm not a runner, but I marvel at people who do it. Way to go!

Edited this because I'm not sure if it should be "one of the people who is" or "one of the people who are." My gut reaction is the former because I don't think I would have edited this if I was happy with it to begin with. (Talk about closet control freaks!)

WOW! You little sneak, I didn't even know you were planning this! Fabulous! Especially having to overcome the past experience, that is really an added challenge. I'm so happy for you. How sore are ya?
I can see doing Danskin again, but I have not signed up for anything else yet. I really get what you told me months ago. That nothing compares to your first time. And I was so spoiled because everything went right, even the weather. But each new experience has to stand on it's own.
How may tri's or races have you done now? Do you have a trophy wall started yet!?
Well done, Jen.

What a great attitude, Jen! Congrats! I think the competitor in me would have a hard time just having fun with it and not caring so much about my finishing time so I really admire that you knew it was important to you to enjoy this one after the experience you didn't enjoy last year. I think it's vitally important that, if one is choosing a "hobby" or sport that is physically demanding like that, it's necessary to be sure that at least some of the events are fun so that, as you said, you can be reminded why you got into it in the first place and why you work so hard to be doing it.
