That is a saying I have heard all my life . It means that the hickory tree will not "bud out" (put out its new leaves) until there is no chance of another frost. I have been keeping an eye on the pollen reports from the weather people and still have not seen hickory listed as a pollen generator so I was not surprised by this cold snap or this morning's frost warnings.

We were in a frost warning last night. It got pretty cold and I'm hoping my plants/flowers are ok. It is warm and sunny out right now and we had quite a bit of rain Monday so I'm hoping they recover from the cold last night.
