I've been going to a sort of personal training facility since the beginning of the year. DH gave me a few sessions for Christmas, and I liked it so much I kept going. But I found out this morning that most of the staff resigned without notice this week! I don't know quite what happened, just that the manager quit Monday and everyone else on Tuesday. There's one trainer left who I've worked with before. I don't know any of the others who remain.
This is really disappointing, because I was making a lot of progress with the two trainers I worked with most. It's hard to find someone you like and I'm not looking forward to starting the search again.
Luckily, I'm not locked into any financial commitment. This is a pay-as-you-go deal and I can stop any time.
I have an appointment tonight so I'll get a little more of the scoop. Then I have to figure out if I'm going to stay with this gym or move on.
Got a little more info last night. Apparently, three of the trainers (including my two favorites) had already announced their intention to leave "soon," two because their significant others were relocating. Then corporate offices introduced a new profit-sharing program in which the facility manager becomes an owner-operator and shares in the profits. In my experience with benefits and compensation, that kind of situation really motivates some people and scares the bejabbers out of others. So, the theory is that the manager, knowing he was about to lose three of his trainers, decided he didn't want his compensation tied to the facility's financial performance. And the others decided this was as good a time as any to move on, since that's what they were planning anyway.
Now this is all from a guy who came from the corporate offices to help out while they try to hire new trainers. So I'm not sure if there were any other factors involved. I'm leaning towards "fuggedaboudit" and finding a new workout option. But they promised to call all the clients over the weekend with an update.
Incidentally, the corporate office guy worked me to the point of near collapse with a very challenging hour of exercise. At the end, he gave me a big smile and told me he was really impressed. "I worked you very hard and you stepped up." So, yeah, I'm still making progress...
I've taken ski lessons from about 8 different people over the years... and I always learned something from every person.
Sometimes, it takes a while for the info to click. Every so often I'll have this flash, "Oh! this is what John was trying to explain back in 2002..."
Maybe that will happen for you... maybe you will LOVE the NEXT trainer and everything will have worked out well. Wishing you the best... how ever it works out!
Susan, Sorry that this has happened. Onet hing I have discovered over the year is that that there are many well qualified trainners. Use your skills and resources to do some great research. This is a booming business. Good luck.
Sorry that this happened with something that you were enjoying. Hopefully when you find out more tonight it will help with your decision. Maybe the others quit to start their own business???? Hopefully what ever the problem was it will not have a major affect on you and the other clients. The gym does owe its members some sort of explaination if only to asure you that you will continue to get the same services that you are enjoying now.
