We've never (okay once when my youngest was in the hospital) done Thanksgiving out before. I was hesitant to eat with a group of strangers, but it was a pleasant atmosphere, almost like a huge family reunion. The choices we had were excellent for people with all kinds of health issues, or just wanting to "pig" out. The restaurant served buffet style, which of course you had to be in control of your portions. From salad to meat selections it was great. They had a choice of non-mayo laden salads and fruit bowl, mashed, baked and augratin potatoes, green beans with almonds, corn and carrots (didn't mention the relish tray filled with fresh vegies) Chicken, turkey, prime rib and ham. They did have stuffing, but I only like mine, and gravy...didn't try those to things. And of course pies galore for dessert...I took the fresh fruit instead.
Now that we are only two for dinner, I am not going to cook for Thanksgiving anymore....well at least not if it's only two of us. With choices like that, I couldn't beat it.
It's never too late to get it right.

My parents flew in yesterday in the late afternoon (4pm), so we'd made plans to go out as well. If you're ever in the Tampa Bay area for Thanksgiving, the Rusty Pelican restaurant has waterside dining and a lovely buffet I personally found the gravy too salty (which was okay, because then I could just not eat it!), but their oyster dressing was really, really good, as were several of their seafood dishes (we're on the water! It's fresh! It's in addition to the turkey, not instead of, and meant I could enjoy small samples of things instead of gorging on one dish.) I'm still not able to eat a whole lot (the pain medicine makes my stomach a little tossy-turny), so a buffet was perfect for us this year.

I always seem to have a hard time for those years that I spend Thanksgiving alone. This year, everyone went out of town. I decided that I really wanted turkey. However, a turkey for one is just too much. I purchased a couple of 6 oz turkey breasts and 2 thighs. I portioned out each breast and thigh then froze.
Today, I pulled out one breast and one thigh. I baked those in the oven. Portioned out a serving and put the rest in the refrigerator.
I steamed some broccoli and cauliflower and cooked a small sweet potato.
The only thing I forgot was the green beans. I will fix those tomorrow.
For desert, I'm going to have some thawed cherries and bananas mixed up with a little bit of yogurt and some vanilla.
