Hi! This seems like a really good and supportive place!
Today, I did pretty well on exercise but less well on food.
E: 15 mins yoga, 15 mins weights, 30 min walk
B: yogurt with granola, coffee
L: small roast beef sndwich, iced tea (ARGH!)
D: Chinese chicken salad w/veggies
S: Weight Watchers ice cream sandwich / 1 oz almonds
Supplements: multivitamin/mineral, cranberry, calcium, 1 low-dose aspirin

Goal #1) exercise every day, including weights 3X weekly and walk 20 mins+ daily
Goal #2) record what I eat (everything!) each day
Goal #3) journal about how the day went - using Chef Kathleen's Daybook!

Janice,

Take it baby step by baby step. Don't make HUGE goals that you know are not really going to work for you. Start with one thing and go from there. We are here if you need anything, please don't hesistate to ask.

Hi Smart, it is nice to meet you. Sounds like you have a good thing going for you with having a gym at work. That is a nice deal...getting to watch some TLC AND working out. Smiler I love hearing things like that. Keep up the great work.

Well, I'm back again to give it another try. I only made it 3 weeks last time before life got the better of me and I "fell off the wagon."

Here's hoping for "second time is a charm." Smiler

I did manage to walk on the treadmill today for a half hour while watching "What Not to Wear" in our company fitness center. Somehow watching that show and walking made the time fly by! If I can wrestle the remote from the "Y&R" junkies this just might work. Smiler

Thanks for all your encouragement! I like the idea of fitting in 10-15 minutes of exercise throughout the day. I have made a commitment to park as far from the entrance at work so I can get a little bit of a walk in the morning and evening. I also plan to try and fit in some swimming in the evening.

I made pot roast last night (I used Bison instead of beef--- much less fat). I am proud I only took one serving! I usually take a second and sometimes a third!

It's been hard but I am working on it!

thanks!

Maddie

Congrats on your first week, Maddie!

As for fitting in exercise, I work a LONG day--10 1/2 hours--and that means I leave my house at 7:15 a.m. and don't get home until 6:30 p.m. In the beginning of my journey, I thought it was simply impossible to get up any earlier in the morning, so I tried to exercise after I got home from work. The reality was, though, that I was making excuses alot and not getting it done because I was too tired (or because exercising after work then pushed dinner even later and it was way too close to bedtime for me to digest it fully before going to sleep).

After some urging from the board members, I agreed to just give mornings a try. I got up 30 minutes early on workdays for a few weeks to get my exercise in. It was ROUGH in the beginning. I may have only gotten in 2 days of workday exercise that first week because it was hard to build that habit...but I kept at it, because I'd promised the folks here that I would give it at least 3 weeks (the time it takes to build a habit). By the end of the 3rd week, I was doing MUCH better. The thing I REALLY loved is that, during my workday, when those thoughts of "UGH! I have to go home and exercise after work!" would enter my mind, I could follow them with "NO you don't! You've already exercised today!" THAT was the clincher for me...it felt SO good to have it done before my day had even started!

Two and a half years later, I am a confirmed morning exerciser...you couldn't convince me there was a better way. Was it an EASY habit to establish? Heck no...it was painful! But now, it's habit--it's automatic. I roll out of bed and into my exercise clothes before I've half even thought about it. I get up about 40 minutes early now so I have time to get into my clothes and shoes, have a trip to the bathroom and still get in 30 minutes of exercise.

Tip: If you decide to try this, commit to a consistent bedtime. You can't keep going to bed later and later and expect your body to keep going on less and less sleep, especially when you're asking more of it with exercise.

Sounds like you had a good first week Maddie. Good for you!

As for "fitting in" exercise, you need to schedule it in to your day. Put it in your appointment book in ink and don't let yourself reschedule something else for that time.

You can walk (or do other exercise) at lunch time, before or after work. You just need to make the committment to take the time for yourself.

You also don't need to do everything at once. If you have 10 minutes here or there, take advantage of it and use it to do something active.

Thanks for all your support. My first week on the plan went well, not perfect but I am trying to learn that is OK too. I am celebrating my successes... not eating pizza at work and eating my lunch i brought, working on portion control. I need to work on getting more exercise, that is hard.

How do some of you fit in exercise when you have a busy work schedule? I'd love some ideas, tips and inspiration!

Hi Maddie,
Welcome and buckle your seatbelt sister, it's quite an adventure. You are in the right place for a common sense approach to weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.

Welcome!!!

Welcome and congratulations on your achievement, Mathilda! You're exactly right that this is a big one...and you're also right on target with celebrating your successes. I spent a lot of years beating myself up over every mistake I made. It feels a lot better to pat myself on the back for my successes! Smiler

That was very helpful. I have read the Baby Steps 101-food threads and will read the other tomorrow. It's getting late for this ol gal Smiler

Welcome! I have been out of town a week or I would have said Howdy sooner. Smiler

Each topic of conversation is called a "thread" because all the posts about that topic are "tied together". The "Baby Steps 101-Exercise" and "Baby Steps 101-Food" are thread titles. A few threads like this one for the "Cooking Thin Fit Club" are anchored so that they stay at the top of the page but other threads are pushed towards the bottom of the page as new threads are added on. When you "bump up a thread" it means that you have posted a reply to a thread for the purpose of moving it back to the top so that it can be easily found.
The threads Sheri had bumped up had gotten pushed down again, that happens real fast when the board is busy, so I bumped them up again for you.

FYI: I did not know this when I first started but when you see notations like "dd" "ds" and "dh" it means "dear daughter", "dear son" and "dear husband". Then there are the "in-laws" such as "mil" for "mother-in-law", etc, etc.

Well I'm trying to get off the diet roller coaster but apparently I'm a roller coaster junkie because I'm sure struggling! I will continue to push forward and forgive myself for the poor eating habits I've developed. But it is a difficult road to walk. Thank you for being there to encourage me! What are Baby Steps 101 - Exercise and Baby Steps 101 - food threads?

Welcome, citydweller! Sorry I missed that this folder had been updated so I'm late in saying hi and welcome to the family! As I'm sure you're already beginning to realize, the resources available here--between what KD and her team post on the home page and what KD and the members post on the forum--are immense and will be a guiding force for you if you choose them to be.

I had spent my life dieting and getting fatter and fatter. Finally, for health reasons, I made the decision to get off the diet rollercoaster between my 50th and 51st birthdays and start a lifestyle change. Almost three years later, I'm still not at goal weight, but I'm another believer in the "slow and steady wins the race" motto.

I bumped up the Baby Steps 101 - Exercise and Baby Steps 101 - Food threads for you. Those two threads are an EXCELLENT place to start.

Good luck citydweller and all others who have just begun the journey!

I have lost 83 pounds using common sense, yummy food and exercise. It took me 2 years and the motto of Slow and Steady wins the race was and still is my mottoSmiler

Planning was key for me, so having the daybook has been helpful this year. Actually, I am up 7 pounds (errrrr) right now and in the past I would have given up and gone up, up, up!

I haven't been able to do my normal exercise routine and I wasn't journaling. I got out my daybook today and will look for exercises I can do at the moment. I will get back to my goal before summer is over Big Grin

Welcome aboard!

Kat

Goal:
Exercise at least 3 times per week.

Remember the positives.

Get the munchies under control!
