1. Sorry this is so late.

2. KD - You looked gorgeous, as usual. Good job on Today.

3. Madelyn Fernstrom talked about getting at least 5 fruit servings into a daily diet - yes, she mentioned that more is better, but felt that 5 was a minimum.

What 5 fruits are you going to get into your diet today? At this point in the day, we should probably be halfway through our list.

1. Banana
2. Blackberries
3. Applesauce
4. Kiwi
5. Peach

1. Orange
2. Banana
3. Strawberries
4. Peaches
5. Peaches

I normally get 3 - 5 fruits and vegetables in a day. How do I manage to get that many in, I disguise them in other foods. Or example, it's not hard to hide celery, carrots, onions, zucchini in meatloaf or tuna loaf, or salmon loaf. No one knows they are eating a requirement...and it makes for better taste.

It's never too late to get it right.

Susan,

Thank you for posting that article! It was very good, and I agree, to eat TOTALLY local is very difficult, even here in CA. I guess I should have clarified that 99% of our PRODUCE not our entire diet is local, and in season. The other items that I get fresh, local, and mostly organic are:
some beef
milk
eggs
nuts

Some of the things that I just can't get fresh and local are:

coffee (even if I could, I probably wouldn't, because we just love Peet's coffee SOOO much!)
bananas, mangoes (we don't eat nearly as many of these as we used to), and pineapples
spices
wheat and other grains (which I grind and use for all of our baked goods)

Some things that are just cost prohibitive or difficult to find to buy fresh and local:
pork
most beef
poultry

For me it is more important that our produce is fresh and local, but it would be nice to have everything locally grown, but it just doesn't work here, and it's not THAT important to me.

Blessings,

Lori

I can honestly say that I never get in 5 fruit servings/day and I don't know if I would want to upset my calorie balance that much to allow for that many.

So far today I had grapes and strawberries along with some dried pomegranate and acai that was mixed into my granola cereal.

I comsume far more veggies than fruits - today I had two servings of mixed field greens, plus tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplant and I haven't even gotten to dinner yet.

Lori, I don't suppose you get the SF Chronicle, but there was a very interesting piece yesterday about "locavores" and how difficult it is to eat ONLY locally grown foods, even in California.

So far about 1.5 cups of strawberries and a half of a can-a-dew which is a cross between a cantalope and a honeydew. It was fairly small which is why I just cut it in half.

I will probably add some fruit to my salad with dinner and maybe have a V8 fusion to drink.

Not quite have way through the day yet....have only had breakfast and my "morning snack" which is actually an extension of my breakfast.

Here's the fruits and veggies that I"m eating/have eaten today:

1. 2 servings strawberries
2. 1 serving spinach
3. 3 servings leafy greens and sprouts
4. 1 serving carrots
5. 1-2 servings various mixed veggies in my salads and on my pizza tonight

OOPS! I just realized that didn't correctly read your homework! I thought you were wanting fruits AND veggies Smiler

The only fruits in the house are oranges and strawberries. Not planning on any oranges (they need to last me through to next Tuesday, and I use them for lunches and breakfasts for dh and the kids) for me today.....I don't think.

So my only fruit today will be:
1. some tomato (probably 1/2-3/4 by the end of the day)
2. 2 servings of strawberries

Since we eat 99% fresh and local and in season, our fruit choices are pretty limited for another month. Strawberries and oranges and kiwis....and we finished off the kiwis yesterday. But I will get more at the farmer's market on Saturday.

Blessings,

Lori

1. Dried cranberries in my cereal
2. Grapes to snack on this morning
3. A pear with lunch
4. Tomatoes on my lunch salad (they're a fruit!)
5. ....I think maybe we'll have baked apples with dinner.

It would usually be more (and the vegetables would be less), but I haven't been grocery shopping this week...and having just been informed that at least (!!???) six people will be coming over for a late lunch/early supper on Sunday...I think I'll wait and go to the store either tomorrow night or Sunday morning so I can get everything I need.

AND...I'll make a fruit salad for that late lunch/early dinner!

Challenge Goals:
*10 minutes of unplanned exercise five times a week
*Gym time twice a week
*Socialize at least once every two weeks.

I will not get 5 fruits in today. I'll get veggies in, but they were out of bananas in the cafeteria downtairs, and I am OUT of fruit at home since I wasn't home last weekend to grocery shop.

Until Saturday when I can get to the store, I'll not be eating a lot of fruit.

That would be the last five strawberries in my house, which I just finished. I'm down to raisins until I go shopping tomorrow night.

Watermellon if it looks good at the store.
