The South Beach Diet frozen breakfast wraps are really pretty good, especially the Southwest one. It has 160 calories and like 5 grams of fiber.

I'm not doing the "Low Carb" thing by anymeans, but I find that I really like some of these South Beach Diet products because they have a MUCH higer fiber content than the regular counterpart in the store.

I realize that making my own wraps would have less preservatives, but that's not going to happen on work days. These I can throw in my bag, stop and nuke for 1:00 on the way up to my office and eat while reading my email.

I guess it is a good, better, best thing for me. Best would be home made, but this is better than eating FF or even the cafe wraps in our building, because they don't have whole grain wraps.

A while back, I discovered that Wal-Mart offers single portions of salmon in their frozen fish section, for $1 each.

Now they offer other types of fish as well, such as mahi-mahi and tilapia, also for $1.

I'm sure that it's cheaper on a per oz basis to buy whole fillets and divvy them up. But for the convenience, I'll take these!

I find them very handy when I'm hard-pressed to pack a healthy lunch when the cupboards are bare.

I get one of these out of the freezer, along with some frozen spinach, leftover rice (or the grain of your choice), and a couple of soy sauce packets leftover from chinese take-out (or salad dressing or balsamic vinegar or whatever).

Throw it all together on a plate and pop in the micro for a couple of minutes and voila!

Also, I noticed that our Safeway now offers an Organic line (I think it's theirs) of products, including whole grain pasta and soy milk. I have yet to try any of them though.

No, not that I would never try it, but my kitchen is the size of a closet, so I have no counter space to be working with dough. I don't get to Trader Joe's much but I keep trying to remember to look for the refrigerated ww pizza dough balls that someone told me they sell.

I love this recipe. I add more ww flour than she calls for, but it is generally kd's recipe. I freeze 3 portions per ziplock and take them out the night before I plan pizza. They thaw and rise nicely.

I think that Lori prebakes hers and then freezes. This might be an option too.

We tried a new frozen pizza this weekend. My parents thought is was good, so we thought we'd give it a try.

DiGiorno Harvest Wheat
Four Cheese variety
Serving= 1/6 of pizza
calories: 260
Fat cal: ?70
Fiber: 4g
Sodium: 25% of daily value

We liked it ok. I ate 1/6 of pizza and a huge salad with a very light vinigrette. I have to say I felt satisfied after the meal. I think, though, that had I skipped the enourmous chopped salad, I would have been left wanting more pizza.
We all prefer my pizza way more- it offers more taste and more food for fewer calories and more fiber.
But, on a busy day I would certainly spend the $4.99 again as an alternative to take out.

Tried another lowfat frozen dinner today...

Lean Cuisine Chicken with Almonds features bite-size chicken tenderloins and in a sweet, teriyaki-ish sauce, topped with sliced almonds and served with white rice, green beans, carrots and broccoli (the carrots are yellow and I thought they were yellow peppers).

I had some trepidation going into this because I have a "thing" about meat that looks like it might not really be meat. However, once I got myself to taste it, I kept going until all but the broccoli (which I hate) was gone. It's been a week or so since I had the LC potsticker meal but the sauce seemed relatively similar...a sweet glazey sauce. A tasty meal but I must admit it was not particularly filling. On the other hand, I'd waited too long between breakfast and lunch, which I don't usually do, so I was hungrier than usual.

This dinner has 260 calories, 4g fat, 0.5g sat fat, 620mg sodium and 18g protein.

No, I haven't. I have tried the Stonyfield Farms regular yogurt, so I know my Whole Foods carries that line. I'll check when I'm at WF today for the frozen stuff. Thanks for the suggestion.

I made a yummy soup today using Fantastic All Natural brand Vegetable barley soup mix. You just add water (I used some chicken broth too) and bring to a boil then simmer for 25 minutes.

I added a can of diced tomatoes and garbanzo beans and I felt like I was eating soup from the Olive Garden. I was soooo good!

I found the mix in the health food section of the grocery store.

Yea! That's why I bought it! hehe Not only do I have a tiny apartment freezer that won't fit a half gallon of ice cream with what else is in there, but I just can't be alone with a half gallon of ice cream, so I only buy pints. Pickins' are gettin' mighty slim in the pint dept., at least at my Giant. I only saw two or three flavors of the lowfat frozen yogurt at my store--of course they had a dozen flavors of the full-fat stuff. (sigh) Will have to check around and see if other places have more lowfat frozen yogurt flavors. Fudge Brownie seemed the obvious place to start. Wink

I still think it's strange that different flavors of Haagen Dazs Lite vary in fat grams per serving and especially strange that VANILLA ice cream is more fat per serving than several of the other flavors, including chocolate.

I bought Dreyers “Slow Churned” light ice cream for the first time this weekend.

Serving ½ cup - 62 grams
120 cals
3.5 g. fat
2 g. saturated fat

I usually buy Hagen Dazs “Lite” ice creams. The coffee flavor stats are:
Serving 106 grams
210 cals
7 g. fat
4 g. saturated fat

At first, the Dreyers looked like a much better deal calorie wise… it is half as much as the Hagen Dazs. But when I got home, I realized that a serving is almost half as much ice cream, if you look at the grams in a serving.

The Dreyers has sort of a Cool Whip consistency, which I did not care for. I feel like I’m being fooled as there is more air pumped into the container.

I also have a big problem since the Dreyers only comes in half gallon containers and the Hagen Dazs comes in pints. A Dreyers carton has 14 servings and Hagen Dazs has 4.

This is the second time I’ve bought a half gallon of ice cream since about 2001 and the experiment is not going well.

We celebrated my FILs birthday yesterday, so I was thinking ice cream today and yesterday - 7 servings and 6 more servings next weekend. I told ds that we can’t eat up the container and need to save half for next weekend. Well, that is not going to happen… it is nearly gone. I’ve had less than ½ cup… but ds has had several bowl fulls. (If you are lurking or new… my ds was obese but isn’t now… but big bowls of ice cream was one habit that got us all overweight…)

My first inclination is to blame myself for the fact that he can’t seem to control himself with a half gallon of ice cream. I've had the same problem and he obviously either inherited a genetic defect from me or a bad habit… and either way... it is my "fault".

But, I also know that many studies seem to confirm that eating more when confronted with larger portions or larger containers seems to be almost innate or human nature - and many/most people have this issue. So… it is back to the pints of Hagen Dazs for us. Plus, if we don’t finish a pint… I can hide it in the freezer for next weekend… No way to hide a half gallon container. Plus, I love the Hagen Dazs and didn’t care for this.

There is a good WebMD article on portion and container size and weight.

Big Portions, Big Calories, Big Weight Issue

Just tried another Lean Cuisine as I got to washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen and, by the time I was done, I was too hungry to wait to cook what I had planned. This time, I tried the Lean Cuisine Lasagna with Meat Sauce from the One-Dish Favorites line.

Once again, pleasantly surprised--I gobbled it right up! It's 7 grams of fat, 3 grams of sat fat and 310 calories and a smaller serving than any of the other Lean Cuisine dinners I bought. Still, very tasty. Would definitely buy this again.

I have discovered that I MUCH prefer brown jasmine rice over long grain brown rice. A few weeks ago we made the trek to Trader Joe's and I bought a bag of brown jasmine and brown basmati rice (this was the second time I have tried brown basmati). Absolutely HATED the basmati (both times, two different brands, bought at two different stores about 2 years apart)...threw that in the garbage! BUT the brown jasmine was WONDERFUL! It cooked up much less chewy than long grain brown rice, and had a really nice flavor. It is also a little lighter in color than long grain brown rice, so it is easier to serve to white rice eaters (and so far not one of them has complained about taste or texture, they've said how good it is, but I still don't tell them it's brown rice, because they are the types that wouldn't eat it if they knew, even if they liked it....no, not someone in my house, but someone that we eat with on a regular basis).

Blessings,

Lori
