A run in with Wheat Thins

This past weekend I had Wheat Thins in my pantry. Nabisco sent me a coupon for a free box. I picked them up and intended for my dd to eat them. They are not on my low, low fat diet and I frankly have not been missing them or other crackers.

However... I had the crackers and I was working through some tough emotional stuff and I "needed" crunchy crackers. The fact that the WT's were there made my "need" a "NEED" so I ate about 2 servings of them. I would have NEVER gone out to buy them. Not a huge deal, but given my health concerns I need to avoid foods with that much fat and salt.

I've been thinking about the fact that the WT's called my name so loudly. If they had not been in the pantry, eating them would have not crossed my mind.

I generally keep a very clean pantry and fridge. I do this because I know that there are times my will and my resolve plummet. Even though I would have resisted or not even considered the WT's most days, last Sunday was a rough day and I had the crackers- not a good combo platter Wink

This experience brings me back to the idea of keeping my pantry clean. Are there foods you just don't bring into the house?

I don't bring in crackers except for Triscuits. Cheese crackers of any type are to be especially avoided- GOldfish, Cheddar Bunnies, stuff like that. I also don't keep peanuts or any salted nuts here. Nuts w/o salt never call my name. Generally, I avoid processed stuff like cookies, cereal and snack stuff.

How's your pantry looking this week?

Without my permission, a family member bought a bag of mini candy bars. I can't resist those.

The're tiny, so having a serving of 4 is no big deal...and 4 more, and 4 more, and 4 more and...

Goal: Stop stress snacking.

I recently discovered that Publix carries it in multi-packs of individual serving size bags. That really helps with the portion control. Dena has one bag a day for her snack at work.

One thing I don't buy is Danish Wedding Cookies. I love those things and can go thru the whole bag in nothing flat.

My biggest struggle is Terra Chips. I'm fine with the little strip ones, I put them in salads all the time. I usually have DH ration the regular chips out for me (even though I know where he "hides" them) when I want some. Having to go all the way to go down to the basement is a trip I rarely feel like bothering with.

One thing I do with stuff I have a hard time with, is to make sure that the bag of whatever is "hidden" in a cupboard I rarely use and that is higher up than my eye level. I can't count the number of bags of stuff I've "craved" and hidden up there and then had to toss because I've forgotten about. Wink

As long as I have something crunchy at every meal, I'm not much for snacking in general. If I don't have a bunch of textures in my meal, I'll "crave" crunchy stuff for hours. And like fbroadie, if I'm craving a specific item, it's easier to eat a small portion of it and I'm done, but I do try to wait until my next meal and work it in.

And I love cheddar bunnies, too. Blue Diamond's Nut Thins are the bestest things ever, but I seem to be pretty good with those.

Life is like a roller coaster, with lots of ups and downs, but the curves, spirals, loops and corkscrews are what make life interesting.

I have to be careful with crackers, chips, anything salty. I also don't bake or keep ice cream in the house.

I struggle with having salty things in the house, especially potato chips. We do have Cheddar Bunnies in the house which I occasionally have for snack along with Pirates Booty but it's planned for. Anything else is just too much of a temptation and not worth it.

Sorry to hear about your Wheat Thins incident. That is never fun.

I kind of have the opposite problem. I do keep stuff like that around, and it doesn't call my name very often. But if I do have a hankering for something, say chocolate or something salty, and it is not available, I will eat everything but the kitchen sink trying to satisfy that urge, and in general I would have been better off just eating whatever it was I was wanting. I do make an effort when I eat the bad stuff to count out the serving and put it in the smallest bowl I have so that it looks like a bigger portion. And I try to have a big glass of water with whatever it is to make it more satisfying.

For the most part, my pantry is full of canned goods and dried pasta, nothing too tempting. I think the chocolate chip bag is still sealed, although I am feeling the baking itch. Maybe making applesauce this afternoon will take care of that.

My fridge is full of tasty veggies from the farmer's market. I really do want to try the kale chip recipe that I found online. This is the second time I have bought kale with this intention. The last bunch ended up in the trash, having wilted in the fridge. I am a little scared of it frankly.
