Next week we're hosting out of town guests who look forward to a meal out most days. I thought this might be a good time to open a discussion about portion control and healthier choices at a restaurant. What are you tricks and hints?
I generally go for salads and ask for dressing on the side. I "treat" myself with a Diet Coke and/or another no-cal drink.
What do you do/order to feel satisfied without the burger, fries, pizza or steak?
Would you be satisfied eating a couple of someone elses fries if they are really haunting you. I find two or three of my husbands fries satisfies me without feeling deprived. Then again if you are eating out every day that could add up.

Just found out that 2 of the places we'll likely visit have options that will work well for me. One place is an upscale gourmet pasta, pizza place. I just called and they now do organic, "create your own" salad options. Perfect. The other place is a super casual burger place with lots of local color. I called them. They now carry grilled Boca burgers. I will just have to resist the fries; )
Thanks, Dawn. When I order fish out, I have a pretty easy time sticking to my plan. That is a great reminder. Funny that I was focused on the much higher fat options; )
Also, and I kind of got this from Bree awhile ago. I try to look up the menu before I go to the restaurant. I decide what I want, that way I'm not deciding while I'm hungry and may eat "what I want, instead of what I should" eat. Also, that way if there is something off plan that I really, really want then I can plan food and extra exercise before I go.

I have been ordering fish at restaurants to not feel "cheated" by eating out. I also order salads, particulary in the summer because I want them. However, I have been trying to eat more fish in general, so I find that if I order fish out, I'm satisfied. I realize there are probably more calories in fish dishes served in restaurants than what I would make at home, but I'm sure it is still much less than pizza, a burger or fries. Even our local top notch "burger joint", Bub's Burgers offers a mahi-mahi sandwich.
