He was laid off in Dec. and is looking forward to joining the ranks of the employed once again.
I've been very proud because he got some AWESOME interviews with HUGE companies like Intuit, Google, Microsoft.
But the interview process was also VERY stressful (like 7 hour interviews and being called back 4 times and competing with SEVERAL candidates). He handled the stress really well and the juggling of the different offers and rejections, etc.
He decided to take a job as a contractor and basically will be doing what he was doing before (which I don't totally understand what that is anyway). I thought I understood what the new company did... and was trying to explain to my mom on the phone... but dh said that I didn't have it quite right.
The commute will be better than his old job..
So, wish us luck as we start a new different stressfulness.
Send us good vibes that he will keep some healthier habits as he has lost about 10-15 lbs eating breakfast and lunch at home and getting more activity. Crossing fingers.

Wouldn't do you any good.
He bought a new TV one time, but nobody could figure out how to hook the VCR up to it. We had splitter boxes and about 68 cables and switching boxes. When we moved, Jamie was 12 and re-hooked up all the wires and got the TV and Cable and VCR and stuff all working.
When our computers die... he and his dad and brothers (all computer geeks) all call back and forth and go to Fry's electronics and buy new gadgets... and then 6 months later (when I’m screaming that I want a computer that works) they decide that the computer is old and we need a new one.
I had to pay Comcast to hook us up to the internet.
He started to do the taxes with Turbo Tax and gave up and took them to H&R block.
You got people in your house you need managed? You need flow charts and spread sheets and data bases created for some project? I'll send him over. He is good at that.
I think Nelson manages people very well. I don't know what they all do... but he manages them and the flow charts and stuff, somehow.
Getting itunes back on your computer… can’t help you there.
We don't even know how to burn a CD at our house... I ask my sister to do it for me.

No. And he sort of has a point. He likes to get away from the office. Unfortunately, at Adobe… he would say, “I went for a walk today and got lunch.” “Where’d you eat lunch?” “Peggy Sue’s” <15 steps down the street - heart attack burgers, fries and shakes.>
But, I do think that he felt way better walking every day while he was off. When all of the phone calls and interviews would get to him, he would go for a walk. I hope he’ll keep it up. It is way better than getting away for some comfort food.

Accept that life is full of new stresses all of the time, so this will just be a different one. I am sure he will do well. I will keep you guys in prayer.
Boy do I wish I could borrow him for a day or two. My hard drive died and I can't get all of my i tunes back. They are camping out on a disk and I am about to go nuts trying to get them on my i tunes files.
He has bigger fish to fry though and I am very happy for him and you. mj

Documentum. (sp?) I've never heard of them (but that doesn't mean anything...) but, I hear they are big.
LOLOLOL...Yep, they're big!
That's wonderful, wonderful news! I was just thinking a couple of days ago I should email you and see what the scoop was on his job hunt. Glad it went so well and that he is rocking and rolling again! Glad the retirement peek wasn't frightening...I think that is hard for lots of couples. My parents have done fine but some of my aunts and uncles are struggling.

I don't know... I think about the same. I've been careful and haven't bought gas in two weeks (and still have half a tank. ) I drive a Toyota Corolla so it isn't a gas guzzler. And Nelson started driving Jamie to music lessons so that cut 20 miles a week off of my driving (although, gas is being burned... just not in my car.)
I think that the new commute is 15 miles... but it is the "reverse commute" most people are going South and he will be going North. He used to be about 20 miles from Adobe... but it would take 40-50 mins. each way. This should really only take 20 mins or so.

Oh thank you!
And thank you everyone for all of the good wishes! It is odd... he has left for work.
We did get a little taste of retirement... it was much better than I thought! We didn't drive each other nuts. He walked up to McDonalds for a cup of coffee every day (about 2 miles). He did a lot of yard work. It was sort of like one big long 5+ month long weekend.

Best of luck to Nelson and the whole family as he begins his new work experience! Here's hoping that it will be fulfilling but not too stressful!
Personal Healthy Habits Challenge - 10/1 to 12/31/08: 1. Exercise: Get back to consistently working out 3-5 X week. 2. Food: Get back to consistently preparing healthy lunches for the week with increased veg servings. 3. Behavior: Reduce intake of sweets.

We've been there and done that...so I am so happy for you. A great stressor is gone and that can't help but make life a little easier. Congrats and give that man a big hug!
It's never too late to get it right.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS, Nelson!!!!! I've been praying for you guys all these months..... YAY!!!!!!!!!!
So who is he going to be working for? And that's great that the commute is better, esp considering the gas prices these days (how much is gas in your part of the state right now? We're at 3.36-3.55 depending on what side of town you are on, and how bad of a neighborhood you want to go into)
YAY Nelson!
And I will be praying that the healthy habits "stick"
Blessings,
Lori
