Girl Scout cookies

Well,
As I reviewed my emails and surfed the web. Since I came home sick again with a child I just finished off by myself a roll of Mint cookies. I am a leader for my daughters troop. So I know how important it is to support the girls. But now I am hating myself for eating the whole roll. I try not to buy anything I like or I will just eat it. But I figured if I didn' t post than I would not admit to it later. I hate this time of year. I can't wait until they are gone.

yummy the thin mint cookies.. They are my fav ...and I have polished off a roll by myself in the past. I don't buy them anymore, even though I would like to support the girl scouts. It's just too dangerous for me. They were at the gym yesterday..if it wasn't for the fact I had no money on me.. I would of been strongly inclined to buy some.

I have a friend who buys 17 boxes of cookies and donates them to charities, church youth groups and the like.

I told my hubby tonite what I did and told him to take the last box of mints to work. The other cookies we bought I am not intrested in those are just my favorite. I agree I don't usually buy things I like because I will just eat. Guess I will just have to work out harder tommorrow. Thanks for the support./

I think that you can give the money to the girls and just have them donate the cookies to a food pantry, or you can donate them yourself.

Oops, I just read Fer's message farther down about doing this exact same thing!

While its a good idea in theory, girls/troops aren't allowed to accept donations. There are very strict rules. It was a HUGE deal for GSUSA to allow troops to fundraise for tsunami and hurricane relief.

The problem I've run into with giving the donation is my nieces don't get 'credit' for whatever prize they have their hearts set on if I don't participate in the fundraiser.

I buy them but they obviously aren't a problem...there are 2-3 boxes still in my pantry from last year. I'll probably bring my 5 boxes to work to share here. That's what I should've done last year because now it seems like they are sort of 'stale' to do that now!

PS) Good job for posting by the way. It can be a very effective tool for stopping us in the future as well as acting as a 'processing' to figure out what went wrong. All way more important than actually eating the cookies was! Smiler

Not to mention, a flat out donation is tax deductable! Less taxes, less fattening, the organization gets more money...win, win, win!

Good for you for for posting!

I agree with others I never buy gs cookies anymore - just too tempting. Sending them to the troops or making a donation works just as well.

I'm on the end of sending them to the troops or giving the girls a donation. I didn't buy popcorn, or nuts this year because of that. I didn't buy fudge from my son's band....why? Because I can't control myself and won't.....so rather than have it in the house, they get a check and I am free of the temptation.

It's never too late to get it right.

You CAN throw them away and make them be gone Smiler - if getting them to the troops is to much effort this year.

For future reference...

My kid is involved in band fund raisers and I give them a donation and don't buy the cookies, choc. covered pretzles, cans of nuts, etc. etc. etc.

They get more profit... and I get fewer cals.
A win-win.

Sending hugs. I've done the same thing, the Somosas were my vice.

Or, find someone who is sending care packages to the troops. Apparently, the LOVE GS cookies. My office has someone coordinating that, and so does my DH's office.

I love GS cookies too, so when DH asked what I wanted I said "Buy what you want and keep them at work."

I'm still stuck with a bunch of Boy Scout popcorn since DS is a cub scout.

Does your council/troop participate in Gift of Caring? For those who wish to contribute to scouting, but do not wish to have temptation at home, our council allows each troop to designate a Gift of Caring charity. An individual pays for X boxes of cookies and instead of receiving them, they are donated to a food bank. It would be better if it was just the money going to the charity, but at least this keeps them out of your house.

Also, if you are both the leader and the cookie mom, perhaps next time you can get a mom in your troop to keep all those cases are her house.

I'm lucky this year - we use Little Brownie Bakers and none of the cookies are vegan. If I were in an ABC Bakers council, then I might be in trouble.
