ok. I just got home to a phone call and email from Gabriel.
He basically said that I should not be auditioning tomorrow, that he doesn't think I'm quite ready. That they are top-notch, and I'm basically not, yet.
Now do I call the Chorale and cancel? I'm afraid that cancelling at the last minute will make me look flakey. But I do "get" what Gabriel is saying.
I would rather have had more time, but I beleive I'll do ok. I am so nervous this morning that I want to cancel. In some ways I don't feel ready, at all.
Just to update, I talked to Gabriel this morning and found out that he'd actually been talking to the director of the Chorale, and found out that the songs I was going to use, while not bad, were really not what they were looking for, so I called and cancelled, Gabe said that it happens, and that it would not make me look flaky. They are going to keep me on the list for future auditions, so Gabe and I are going to work on getting something prepared so that next time I can wow them.

Cate, Do YOU feel you are ready? One thing I have learned from this forum-you decide what works for you!! Don't let anyone tell you or make you feel bad-if you feel you are ready go for it-sending you hugs and strength and the will to do it! Best Wishes to you Cate, Jill

I don't know anything about chorale, but it's not like you only get one shot, right? I mean, there isn't any reason you can't go back and audition again later right? So yea, go ahead and audition now and you can always come back again later and try again.
I say go for it!!!

I agree, Cate, I think you should go ahead and audition....they may possibly even see potential and take you based on that potential trainability. (A professional traveling choir here in our locale does that....they will take voices that they believe to be trainable, and they train them.....they get the exact end product that they need, and it works great for them).
Blessings,
Lori

Cate: I would go, also. I have had no experience auditioning for anything, except maybe interviews for teaching positions. I guess that would be my only jumping off place for this advice. But, my brother is a musician who has had to audition many times for symphonies and orchestras. He and I both agreed that even our worst interviews/auditions were at the very least learning opportunities on what we had to improve upon in order to get what we really wanted. So, if you audition and the director says that you aren't good enough, do you have the opportunity to ask what things he/she would recommend you work on to get better. Would there be another audition time in the future that you could participate in after this one. The worst they can say is that you aren't good enough --- yet! The best thing that they can say is "you're in"! Go for the audition and take it as such, a trial of what you have to work on....and give it your best. After that, you have something to go on....either a position or information on improvement.
All the best, we'll be waiting to hear how it went.

I say go for it too. The worst that happens is you don't get in and get some good feedback you can use to continue to improve and grow.
I also believe that auditions, interviews, etc... are good practice since those are things we generally don't get to do very often and are often anxiety producing. The more we do them, the easier they become.
Out of our beliefs are born deeds; out of our deeds we form habits; out of our habits grows our character; and on our character we build our destiny.
I don't know who Gabriel is. Do you trust his judgement? What would happen if you auditioned and still needed improvement? I think you might be better to audition and do your best -- maybe you'll be better than you think, and if not, maybe they'll give you some good feedback.
