What is your opinion of these? I hear they are as bad as candy bars and I hear they are not a bad choice. There is always so much conflicting information about health!
I just bought 2 Luna Bars at Whold Foods, I spoke with someone there and told her the reason I needed them, she showed me a few that were $2.59 a bar, and then she pointed out that she used either the Luna or Balance, (the price of the Balance there was $1.49 I can get it the same size were I work for $.49) the one's I got on the Luna were the Lemonzest and the Lime (I like tart things) The Nutri info is jjust about the same as "D." mentiones, I will say that Whole foods did have a great selecion of all flavors....

I prefer the PRIA bars. They are very very tasty, and good for a snack, which is what I use them for. I buy a case (something like 24-30 bars) at Costco every 2-3 months. I used to use them as a grab and go snack to eat on the way to the gym when I got up late. I keep them right next to the water bottles in the pantry, so I could grab both and run out the door when I was running late. Now I use them as a quick snack when I'm craving something sweet. They have a lot of soy in them, have a lot of calcium, and actually taste decent.
Blessings,
Lori

wow thank you very much. I am going to check them out, my hard time that I need a pick me up is leaving work and heading to the gym. I eat lunch around 1:00 and leave work @ 5:00 and get to the gym by 6:00. I think if i had a snack around 5:00 on my way home that may curb the appetite and these luna bars sound great thank you
Compare that with a PowerBar Harvest (I picked up a couple cuz they were 99 cents). Good thing I split them into two halves!
Calories: 260 Total fat: 5g Saturated fat: 2g Cholesterol: 0 Sodium: 100mg Total carb: 45g Fiber: 3g Protein: 7g
The vitamin breakdown is *similar*.
I get my Luna bars at both Safeway (dietic section) and Basha's (natural foods section).
When I get a chance to go to Trader Joes (2 hours away) I stock up, because they're much cheaper, and they carry the two flavors I love that the grocery stores don't carry -- chai tea and dulce de leche.
Their spiel about "made for women" is because they contain a decent amount of soy, folic acid, and all that good stuff.

I love Luna bars too. My 5 year old nephew found one in my purse once...when my sister caught him eating it he told her it was a "Lunar" bar that he had gotten from me!

I get Luna bars at the grocery store, in the same aisle as the Slim-Fast & other bars & drinks. My favorite is "Nutz Over Chocolate". . .they taste kinda like a Whatchamacallit bar, all crispy with chocolate. Here's the rundown from the back of a bar:
Calories: 180 Total Fat: 4.5 g Saturated Fat: 2.5 g Cholesterol: 0 Sodium: 100 mg Potassium: 105 mg Total Carbohydrates: 24 g Fiber: 2 g Protein: 10 g
I think they serve a purpose. I usually eat them as a replacement for breakfast, or as one of my snacks on class nights, when I know I'm not going to have dinner.
On those nights, I'll usually add a banana, and maybe a soy latte or a handful of trail mix or a yoghurt to go along with it.
Sometimes I'll have one in the late afternoon, just before I leave work, and before I hit the gym. That way I don't burn out at the gym. Then I'll have a light dinner when I get home.
They're also handy to keep with you when you're travelling. I stick a couple in my carry-on when I fly, or am on a road trip (along with dried apricots, sunflower seeds, etc etc). Keeps me away from the Cinnabons and KFCs out there (usually!).
Read the labels carefully! I usually buy Luna bars, as they are a bit more low cal than others.

I like them- they taste like candy bars to me. I need real food though or I get moody, hungry and I overeat. I avoid them the same way I avoid candy. I was at our local grocery store and they have a beautiful make your own salad bar with loads of options. I thought that this would be a good, quick option to picking up an energy bar.
I think that the problem with energy bars is that many of them are meant to be a meal replacement (they can have that many calories) but lots folks end up having a meal on top of the energy bar. Then you end up with double the calories you should have eaten.
Out of our beliefs are born deeds; out of our deeds we form habits; out of our habits grows our character; and on our character we build our destiny.
I am type II diabetic, so I use them occassionally for a snack or even part of a meal. But this is a different case. You really have to read the labels, I've had some that took my blood sugars through the roof, and when I did read the label, the first ingredient was sugar or a derivative. As long as you aren't going to try and survive on them, they serve a purpose, but as a diet, don't think so.
It's never too late to get it right.

I enjoy them as an occasional snack. They do tend to be high in sugar but I don't make them a daily habit so I don't worry about it. I usually have one or two per week as treats. I like them more than regular candy bars. My favorites are Balance bars-the peanut butter and yogurt honey peanut flavors and the Dulce de leche flavored Luna bar.
