I have always been a descent eater- had my share of goodies and would gain weight. about a year or so ago I developed food allergies and so for the past year I've been dealing w/ changing my food habits to accomodate. It is amazing how many 'comforting' foods one can find that are allergen free. I have a high allergy to milk but also wheat and soy. Anyways- wondering who else on here deals w/ that. I am fed up w/ food - still love to eat- but when I find that something like Lays chips doesn't evoke a reaction- i tend to stick to that one thing. I've been off this group probably since..um.. January but thought i'd try and get back into things for some support. I need to loose about 20 lbs I'd guess- but 10 would make me happy.
thanks cate! looks like you have done some amazing traveling too. will add you to my favs. I have a blog that I do on just gf also. http://www.settingofsilver.blogspot.com/
it's nothing special...but i do have a few favorites that i have made on there including a gfcf (casein free) lasagna. but it isn't exactly 'healthy.' i need to get a grip on some additional healthy recipes that the whole family will love. amy
I have a wheat allergy. I tend to make a lot of brown rice with beans or chicken. I've found that the gluten-free items aren't generally conducive to weight loss being mostly 'white rice' and sugar. I do try and make my own stuff, and have done some baking and such. In some ways its more challenging being single and trying to eat healthfully than being gluten-free. I've found a few things that are now staples, brown rice tortillas, etc. Breakfast is one of my more challenging meals...
I do have a blog of my own, its not as good as Shana's, but here you go:
thanks guys... i have the gf girl blog on speed dial LOL! i do love her blog and books. never have seen the other so thanks! i'm going out for dinner tonight ...i only get to do that about 1X a month and tonight my allergies are 'saving' me. i looked up the menu for California Pizza kitchen and the only think i can eat is the grilled veg salad. I know they probably grill it in oil of some kind but still better than pizza laden w/ cheese. just ate some crackers and hummus... to stave off hunger..
I am allergic to peanuts and lactose intolerant. It can be a challenge sometimes, but by this point I have mostly figured out how to deal with it. I am sure that wheat would be a big challenge for me. But there are some great gluten free websites out there. Here are two of my favorites. http://glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com/
Amy, I've had food allergies all my life and at the moment they seem to be getting worse. I'm allergic to fish, nuts, almonds -- and maybe more that I don't know yet. Pesto is really bad.
My nut allergy keeps me away from lots of sweets that would otherwise pack on the pounds, but I still eat stuff I can deal with, such as dark chocolate. Not being able to eat fish is a bummer healthwise, but emotionally I don't know what I'm missing, so that's no big deal.
What I really, really hate is the constant vigilance. Wherever I go I have to ask what's in the food. Sometimes I end up getting symptoms anyway.
So it's a mixed bag. I'd rather not be allergic though, given the choice. It narrows my diet quite a bit and makes me more dependent on meat than I would like.
