My original kitchen designer completed missed the boat with her design for the shelf for our convection/microwave. She never check the dimensions and just assumed it was standard depth.
Well, it's not becaue it's also a convection oven so it doesn't fit in the space she designed for it.
The microwave has already been purchased and we are not going to buy a new one. There is no other place for it to go in the kitchen.
What we came up with today as a solution is to do a 21 in depth (upper) cabinet in that section of the kitchen and then the microwave will be built in to the shelf below it.
Ordinarily that wouldn't be a problem but the desk is below that. The desk was originally supposed to be only 21 in deep so the lower and upper cabinets would have been the same depth. What we decided to do is make the desk area 24 in deep to match the depth of the rest of the lower kitchen cabinets. With the granite over hang, that will give us about a 4 - 5 inch difference between upper/lower cabinets.
I know that this is probably really hard to visualize with just a written description but what do you guys think? Do you think it will look weird?
PS The microwave/desk area are at the far end of the kitchen near the eat-in area.

What is a B.O.? I figure the "O" is organized.
And to Dawn, before I started taking care of the mail IMMEDIATELY, I used to have piles. Now, I do similar to Sandy and Bee. Handle it ONCE!

I have a similar system. There is a spot for mail (junk gets tossed or shredded immediately), then a spot for my house project that needs attending to daily, school stuff and work stuff. Only the stuff that is actively being worked on stays at my desk.
Stuff that we need to keep for longer term projects, reference, tax reasons etc.... gets filed upstairs in dh's office.
Stuff from school I sort through quickly and am very picky about what gets kept. I have Rubbermaid containers for that stuff that gets stored in the basement.
I don't keep much so it has to be pretty special or important to stay in the house.

I hate that my house frequently looks cluttered because of all the mass amount of mail and paper, but I am at a loss of how to deal with it.

Dawn, I am not Bee (obviously) but I will offer my own system. I have a small drawer system of filing in my kitchen "office" area. I also have our permanent, bigger system in the basement. I have a small area in the kitchen off that I use as a holding area for bills to be paid or stuff that will need my attention within a week or so.

I misses this thread yesterday, but am glad to see that things seem to be resolved.
(Not sure what this says about me, but it never dawned on me that food would end up on paper/office stuff --- I sort of see things in my mind's eye as put away and in order.)
I met with the kitchen designer this morning and we have a plan that I can live with. In actuality, it will probably balance out the kitchen even better. It will also give me a bit more storage space
Sounds like a good solution was discovered! Yeah!
Sorry if you didn't see the humor...I knew the other SHE's would but I'm afraid I might've stepped on your toes. Not intended I promise.

ROTFLOLOLOL!!!!
I could actually see my family starting to put papers in the microwave when the desk got too cluttered. (“My mom cooked my homework in the microwave… No really… She did!”)
And the food spills... OMG... the spills.
I'm sitting at my desk right now and trying to picture a microwave installed over it...
OK... I CAN visualize the disaster THAT would be!!
SEE, that'd be me and that's was the reason for my comment to begin with. I may not be working and nuking at the same time, but that does not mean there wouldn't be paperwork all over the desk. I have stacks of paper all over my kitchen as it is and I don't even have a desk in there.
I an so not a BO.

I'm sure you're not surprised to hear I was thinking the same thing.

I met with the kitchen designer this morning and we have a plan that I can live with. In actuality, it will probably balance out the kitchen even better. It will also give me a bit more storage space.
I did a lot of research and homework last night and seeing the elevation drawing in front of me this morning really helped me be more comfortable.
Hopefully it will look OK once it's installed!

Bee, I'm sorry I'm no help. I have enough trouble visualizing things when I actually know the space. I'm sure you guys will figure out a good solution. I will throw out that one of the neatest custom kitchens I ever saw had a variety of heights of cabinets and I really liked the effect this had. I guess I like a little non-conformity but of course, I didn't live there and it wasn't the depth. The first thing I thought of is is it in a traffic pattern where you are going to be going 'around' it all the time?
But this cracked me up:
quote:
I'm not concerned about the microwave being over the desk because I don't keep anything out on the desk (and I certainly wouldn't be working and nuking at the same time).
This is a prime instance of the BO (born organized) vs. SHE's (sidetracked home executives, ie FLYBabies). LOLOLOL I certainly would NEVER be nuking when there WASN'T stuff on the desk! ROFLMBO
Bee, I really can't "picture" it well either. I do know that we purchased a new microwave not long ago that is a bit larger than the one we had. (Depth & height) We were still able to use it in the same "cubbyhole" in our cabinets where the older one was but we had a cabinet guy come out and rework it a bit.
Hope it all works out. Can you contact, or better yet, MEET with the cabinet people and see what they can come up with?
What irks me the most is that I signed off on these plans in December and am just hearing now that there is a problem. The cabinets must be ordered by Friday so we're time crunched on top of it : (
Oh, how frustrating! It's one thing to have a design issue ... it's another thing to be hearing about it at crunch time, instead of back in December.
Getting a new microwave isn't an option - all the convection/microwave combos are deeper than the regular ones and I don't have room for a second oven so it's a must have.
I'm not concerned about the microwave being over the desk because I don't keep anything out on the desk (and I certainly wouldn't be working and nuking at the same time). The height of the microwave is exactly what I have now and it works fine even for a shorty like me.
The question is really about the depth of the upper cabinets (which again, I know is hard to visualize).
My in-laws actually had some good feedback for me and an idea that may actually work (they build houses in FL) so I've got another message out to the kitchen designer to see if it's possible.
