Well... it's been an interesting week to say the least. Looks like Bob's dad is going home tomorrow - he's still got the Congestive Heart Failure but it's compounded with the fact that he's got Duhring's Disease (which is essentially the same as Celiac's Disease but not only has the intestinal aspects of Celiac's but also manifests as sores on his skin (he also has sores in his mouth and ears) and the medicine to treat the Duhring's DIsease causes Hemolytic Anemia which causes a whole another host of problems. SOOOOO has anyone done gluten free versions of KD's Recipes????
just got this via email. it looks good. I do like nottapasta for gf pasta. i have yet to find a good gf pasta that is good cold however (to make a picnic type pasta salad..)
just saw this pop up on the home-page...looks gf to me amy ps: beware of spices...some have flour added. I think mccormick is pretty safe...but just beware...

P.s. Do people with Celiac have to worry about products on their skin having wheat in it also?
If they've developed sores on their skin after eating wheat, they actually have a variation of Celiac's called Duhrings Disease. Duhrings patients usually have the celiac symptoms as well. this is what Bob's dad has. One of my many frays on the net lead to a list of household products that were gluten free.

You can find wheat free Tamari in most markets now. I can even find organic, reduced sodium, wheat free kind ; )

some do...some don't. most mom's w/ kids who have autistic kids on 'the diet' won't use playdough for example because it is made from wheat. Even those kids who would never eat it... they think there is skin penetration. Not sure on the celiac and what they think.

I get their newsletter along w/ quite a few others....this looked pretty tasty and it just popped up in my in-box. I do like the notta pasta. I had it earlier this week w/ just sauteed yellow peppers and onions on the top. it does NOT taste good as a leftover and you only cook it about 4 minutes. it goes from crunch to mush in seconds.
By the way- was just at a different store and Bob's Red Mill also makes a 'hot rice cereal' that I assume is like the Rice and Shine. (I bought it but haven't tried it yet.) Seems like it would be a good 'old person' breakfast. Like Cream of Wheat LOL. Sorry- not meaning to offend anywone that likes cream of wheat

it is possible your local store will have them. our local farmer jacks has lots of GF stuff. not sure about 'down south' there
I'm in the houston area so I have lots of options. I don't think any of the grocery stores in my area have Namaste other than the local health food store by the space center.

Have you tried looking at GF bannana bread recipies and adding some poppyseeds? Or just a vanilla cake and add some in. (Namaste has a good white cake.) I checked on my GF recipie yahoo group and lots of additions of poppyseed but no actual poppyseed bread. If you want some banana or other cake type bread recipe let me know.... amy

Bob was telling me about his day yesterday. Honestly some of the antics his dad pulls reminds me of how a 4 or 5 year old acts. At one point Bob told his dad, "ya know, I am not your whipping boy and if you continue to treat me the way you have been, I will go and do something else for a bit. "

It seems to be going okay. Bob's Dad is a bit cranky about not being able to eat a lot of snacky type food and he had to go back on the Dapsone to relieve some of the itching which means his hemoglobin has dropped again. It's going to take a while for the sores to disappear on his skin.
Bob made him popcorn yesterday and it wasn't buttered correctly according to Bob's dad And he proceeded to tell Bob exactly how it should be buttered (and it was the most convoluted process I had ever heard). All I can say is that Bob has waaaaay more patience with his dad than I would have had in that situation.
Right now I'm on a quest for GF Poppyseed cake. No luck in finding a good recipe for that yet.
How's the GF diet doing? I just finished looking thru KD's cookbooks- 80% are GF. Just on any of the stir fry dishes you want to use Tamari instead of soy sauce (which has wheat.) I listed ones I'm going to do again or try....(I've gained probably 5 pounds this month and i'm disgusted w/ myself...back on the wagon as of an hour ago.) My hands down fav recipe which is GF is Flank Steak Sw Potato Stir fry...p 159 of Getting Thin. Not sure if that would appeal. I've made it many times. Another which looked good was a rice salad w/ cranberries..p 219. Tons of ckn and fish ideas. Anyway- hope you are figuring things out. amy
I thought i'd add that I make tons of 'pantry meals.' so i dump a can of black beans, tomatoes, some ckn broth and leftover sausage... or white beans and artichokes. Also not sure if hummus would be FILs cup of tea.... but that is another 'soft' food that is easy to eat. you could put on rice crackers. or even cooked veggies (like asparagus) that would be softer. At 90 not sure if he'd be in for that sort of thing...just thought i'd mention
Rice and shine is by arrowhead mills. it is 'organic brown rice grits' which I think means they take the raw brown rice and grind it up. And you mix it like oatmeal w/ water in micro.
I also add baby pears- you could add just about anythhing including an egg for protein.
probaby find either in cereal aisle or baking aisle. amy
