[quote]First Name: Cheryl

Age: 38

Location: Michigan

Journey Began: I don't know, birth? Just kidding. Basically on and off since puberty. I was tiny before then.

Maintenance Began (if applicable): Not there yet!

Pounds Lost: Just started. Not sure yet.

Marital Status: happily married

Children/Ages: none (but one cute dog)

How long on the board (FTV’s KD board, if applicable, + this board)? on and off for a few months

Have you met KD in person? When/where? No, but it would be an honor

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight go it on your own? Weight Watchers (no longer)

If you did it on your own, what is/was the basic premise of your self-made plan? I am doing it on my own. I believe in the way KD cooks and also the magazine Eating Well. That is how I like to eat.

Put an X next to the healthy eating & living concepts that you practice regularly:
__X Drink plenty of water (48 or more oz. per day).
__X_ Eat 5 servings or more per day of fruits & veggies.
__X_ Eat all or mostly whole grain carbs vs. white.
___ Portion control your food (weigh/measure/use visual cues for portion size).
___ Exercise at least 3 days a week.
___ Incorporate strength training into your workouts.
__X_ “Everything in moderation.”
___ “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
___ Mini-meal concept (eating about every 3 hours vs. 3 meals a day).
__X_ Get enough sleep most nights (whatever 'enough' is for you).
___ Manage and cope with stress in a healthy way.

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughs/lessons have stuck with you most? I haven't really learned a whole lot of new things, but I love reading about other people and hearing their struggles and triumphs.

Have you ever been a homework captain here on the board? No

As a member, what is your perspective on/what do you gain from homework assignments? I just started reading them. Not sure yet.

If you have a tagline or saying that expresses who you are or your perspective on weight loss, what is it? Don't have one yet.

Finally, if you could give one message to a new member reaching out for help with eating/living healthier, what would it be? I don't feel qualified to do this yet because I have not been as successful as I would like. I will check back soon!

Marital Status: Married for a little over a year
Children/Ages: 3 Dogs and a cat

How long on the board? For about a year

Have you met KD in person? Yes, Kathleen was my mentor during the Dateline Weight Loss Challenge

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight go it on your own? We all just made smarter choices with our meals, worked out and portion controlled.

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughs/lessons have stuck with you most? I always cherish the fact that there are other people out there going through the same battle I go through each day.

Have you ever been a homework captain here on the board? Yes
If yes, what is your advice to new members about whether they should volunteer to be a captain? It gives you a chance to really search within yourself on the questions that you need to answer with your journey.

As a member, what is your perspective on/what do you gain from homework assignments? The assignments give you a chance to reflect on things you might not take the time to access in your life.

If you have a tagline or saying that expresses who you are or your perspective on weight loss, what is it?
Tell it like it is

Finally, if you could give one message to a new member reaching out for help with eating/living healthier, what would it be?
Listen to what Kathleen has to say, read her books and you won't go wrong.

Age:33

Location: Vancouver, B.C

Journey Began: January 2002

Maintenance Began (if applicable): N/A

Pounds Lost: 70 between January 2002 and December 2002. Gained 30 back and since April 2005 I've lost 12lbs.

Marital Status: Single

Children/Ages:None

How long on the board (FTV’s KD board, if applicable, + this board)? I'm a newbie.

Have you met KD in person? When/where? No

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight go it on your own?

WeightWatchers was my plan of choice and my current plan of choice. I like the emphasis on balance and portion control but like any plan it's not easy to follow. I've been the 'fat kid' most of my life, crash dieting in college only to get fat again. I'm tired of being the fat kid.

If you followed a commercial plan, what plan (WW, Atkins, etc.)?

See above.

If you did it on your own, what is/was the basic premise of your self-made plan? (essay)

Put an X next to the healthy eating & living concepts that you practice regularly:
__x_ Drink plenty of water (48 or more oz. per day).
_x__ Eat 5 servings or more per day of fruits & veggies.
___ Eat all or mostly whole grain carbs vs. white.

__x_ Incorporate strength training into your workouts.

___ Mini-meal concept (eating about every 3 hours vs. 3 meals a day).
___x Get enough sleep most nights (whatever 'enough' is for you).
___ Manage and cope with stress in a healthy way.

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughs/lessons have stuck with you most? (essay)

I'm not sure yet. I'm here mostly because I'm frustrated. When I lost 70lbs in 2002 I felt great but wasn't all the way to my goal. I had 20lbs more to go. I gained back 30 and have lost 12 leaving me with 38lbs to go to get to goal. I've come a long way but I'm still fat and that's frustrating to me. I try to do everything right, drink water, eat veggies, watch portions, exercise 1.5 hours 6 days per week and the weight drops off slowly. It's frustrating.

Have you ever been a homework captain here on the board? If yes, what is your advice to new members about whether they should volunteer to be a captain? (essay)

Not sure.

As a member, what is your perspective on/what do you gain from homework assignments?

My weight journey began at age 10 -- which is 30-some years ago. Deprivation, embarrassment and shame came with hearing "your belly gets bigger every time I see you"; or "are you eating another Milky Way?" Finding positive motivation was the hard part.
I've been up & down, losing 30 lbs., then gaining them back. Finally learned that adding lots of veggies, experimenting with new, healthier foods, and fitting in exercise in any way I could -- and getting up & dusting myself off after setbacks -- was key for me.

Weight Watchers helped a great deal too: the accountability is critical, plus I'm blessed with a great leader (thanks Kelly!).

Some more personal data: I'm from Michigan, now living in San Jose CA area. Married with no children, to a skinny husband who can eat anything (hate that!). Have had "synesthesia" (perceive unrelated senses simultaneously; mine is words having food associations) since I can remember -- plays havoc with dieting efforts!

Just found this website -- love the support and ideas everyone shares!

Journey Began: officially, 5 years ago in college; w/this group - June 2005

Pounds Lost: 25 in college which have been gained back since then - that's why I visit this site

Marital Status: single

How long on the board (FTV’s KD board, if applicable, + this board)? since June, 2005

Have you met KD in person? When/where? I wish!!

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight go it on your own?

I have educated myself A LOT and my mom is a home ec teacher, so I have been able to create my own plan. I also met w/a nutritionist last year and follow her suggestions as well. Basically, I try to limit high calorie foods and portions to stay around 1800 calories/day. I know much more than I'm able to follow on most days!! My downfall is losing the willpower to exercise and emotional eating. I've been able to identify several triggers, which has helped, but I know I need to be more active!

Put an X next to the healthy eating & living concepts that you practice regularly:
__x_ Drink plenty of water (48 or more oz. per day).
__x_ Eat 5 servings or more per day of fruits & veggies.
___ Eat all or mostly whole grain carbs vs. white.
__x_ Portion control your food (weigh/measure/use visual cues for portion size).
___ Exercise at least 3 days a week.
___ Incorporate strength training into your workouts.
__x_ “Everything in moderation.”
__x_ “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
___ Mini-meal concept (eating about every 3 hours vs. 3 meals a day).
_x__ Get enough sleep most nights (whatever 'enough' is for you).
___ Manage and cope with stress in a healthy way.

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughts/lessons have stuck with you most?

The biggest is not to give up on myself after having a bad day. I tend to get down on myself when my weight goes up a little, which leads to emotional eating and therefore more weight gain. The second is to create specific baby steps and conquer one at a time instead of trying to take care of all of my issues at once. The third is celebrating small sucesses (like being able to fit into my Ann Taylor pants again!!! yea!!!)

As a member, what is your perspective on/what do you gain from homework assignments?

I can't check the assignments every day and sometimes they don't stick in my head, but the one I remember most is "put your fork down." I realized I was constantly shoveling food in my mouth instead of setting my fork down between bites. I watched some of my thinner friends and co-workers and they almost always set their forks down between bites.

If you have a tagline or saying that expresses who you are or your perspective on weight loss, what is it? (doesn’t have to be a tagline you use in your posts)

It's not about the number on the scale - it's about how I feel about myself.

Finally, if you could give one message to a new member reaching out for help with eating/living healthier, what would it be?

Hang in there and know that you are not alone!! Even "thin" people have issues with their bodies. Make small changes you can do everyday!

Age: 24

Location: Nashville, TN

Journey Began: Age 19 in college. As gone on and off since than.

Marital Status: ENGAGED!!

How long on the board? less that a month

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight or go it on your own?
I started with the Body-for-Life. My now-fiance brought it to me and asked if I'd like to try it with him. I figured I had nothing to lose and we went for it. It was a great semester! Unfortuately life got complicated and I got off track. We have been working out on and off since. Now I want to get serious again and get back that feeling of knowing I'm doing something for myself that is truly going to make a difference in my life.

If you followed a commercial plan, what plan?
Body-for-Life

Put an X next to the healthy eating & living concepts that you practice regularly:
_x_ Drink plenty of water (48 or more oz. per day).
___ Eat 5 servings or more per day of fruits & veggies.
___ Eat all or mostly whole grain carbs vs. white.

___ “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
_x_ Mini-meal concept (eating about every 3 hours vs. 3 meals a day).
_x_ Get enough sleep most nights (whatever 'enough' is for you).
_x_ Manage and cope with stress in a healthy way.

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughs/lessons have stuck with you most?
The idea of rewards and to work on behaviors vs. strickly weight loss.

Finally, if you could give one message to a new member reaching out for help with eating/living healthier, what would it be?
Really stop and think about who you are and what you have problems with and why. This investigation has helped me truely understand my own issues and how to work with them, around them or eliminate them.

If you followed a commercial plan, what plan (WW, Atkins, etc.)?

I basically ate very low fat when I did it on my own, I stuck with it for about 6 months then I got pregnant with my first baby and back to eating eggs , cheese etc.

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight go it on your own? I am not following a plan persay because I want to make healthy, lifestyle changes. I don't want to DIET

If you followed a commercial plan, what plan (WW, Atkins, etc.)? nope

If you did it on your own, what is/was the basic premise of your self-made plan? I am going to make healthy choices and make sure I have the things in my home for it to make it easier to prepare healthy meals.

****One thing I hope to get from the group is healthy, smaller meals and snacks. I grew up with the three large meals a day and snacks, but I know that for me, it is better to eat more often, smaller meals throughout the day than waiting to eat larger meals. I am looking for suggestions on snacks/light meals to have around the house that would be filling enough to prevent further snacking.******

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughs/lessons have stuck with you most? Prepare, prepare and prepare. You have to make it easy on yourself by having the right choices around. A support system is essential.

Have you ever been a homework captain here on the board? If yes, what is your advice to new members about whether they should volunteer to be a captain? nope

As a member, what is your perspective on/what do you gain from homework assignments? I personally have never done a homework assignment.

I have been around for a while, so I thought for the new folks I would go ahead and post and introduction.

Name: Serene

Location: Texas

Journey Began: 2002, when I was diagnosed as diabetic. But bounced back and forth on diets and trying to exercise, etc... until Nov 2004 when I decided I needed to lose weight and get in better shape, because physically it's was taking it's toll.

Maintenance Began (if applicable): not yet. Big Grin

Pounds Lost: When last weighed in March, I had lost 15 lbs, 6 -7 inches and 5% body fat. I don't like getting on the scale. I have a tendency to obsess about it. My next weigh in and measurements etc...is in September.

Children/Ages: none that I know of Wink

How long on the board (FTV’s KD board, if applicable, + this board)? A couple of years... a long time.

Have you met KD in person? No

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight go it on your own? Doing it on my own.

If you followed a commercial plan, what plan (WW, Atkins, etc.)? I did WW at several years back, but quit within a couple of months, to much focus on the scale for me...well that's what I fixated on and I hated getting weighed in public

If you did it on your own, what is/was the basic premise of your self-made plan?

To eat a balanced diet of fruits, veggies, proteins, whole grains and to stay away from refined sugars, junk food and fast food. Everything in moderation.

Put an X next to the healthy eating & living concepts that you practice regularly:

_X__ Drink plenty of water (48 or more oz. per day).

_X*__ Eat 5 servings or more per day of fruits & veggies. *Most days

_X__ Eat all or mostly whole grain carbs vs. white.

_X__ Portion control your food (weigh/measure/use visual cues for portion size). Still struggling with this but doing much better

_X__ Exercise at least 3 days a week.

_X__ Incorporate strength training into your workouts.

_X__ “Everything in moderation.”I strive for this but I still have a problem with bingeing at times

_agree_ “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

___ Mini-meal concept (eating about every 3 hours vs. 3 meals a day).

_X_ Get enough sleep most nights (whatever 'enough' is for you).

Sometimes_ --Manage and cope with stress in a healthy way.

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughs/lessons have stuck with you most? (essay)

1. Baby Steps
2. Don't give up, just keep trying
3. Play with your food

Have you ever been a homework captain here on the board? No, but I have thought about maybe becoming one

As a member, what is your perspective on/what do you gain from homework assignments?

Although, I don't always reply to the hw, it does allow me the chance to think about what is being asked.

Finally, if you could give one message to a new member reaching out for help with eating/living healthier, what would it be?

Start with baby steps... Everything doesn't have to be changed over night. When I finally started back in Nov of 2004, I focused on the fitness part first. In May/June, after feeling pretty solid with my workouts and stuff, I have moved to working more on the food issues and my diet. Practicing more portion control, eating more healthy, etc..

I also think having some sort of support network is good. I go through spurts of posting. However, I tried to at least read and it helps to know that others are having some difficulties and successes... It also helps to motivate me.

Yes and No.

If you followed a commercial plan, what plan (WW, Atkins, etc.)?

I did WW for about a year.

If you did it on your own, what is/was the basic premise of your self-made plan? (essay)

Well, I started out losing 20 pounds by simply starting to walk and doing water aerobics after work. I then hit a plateau and joined Weight Watchers and started making healthy food choices. That with the exercise helped me drop the additional 32 pounds.

Put an X next to the healthy eating & living concepts that you practice regularly:

_X_ Manage and cope with stress in a healthy way.

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughs/lessons have stuck with you most? (essay)

I am new to this so I am just starting to read through the postings. I saw that Baby Steps are important and like that concept. I also really liked what someone had posted about working towards a goal that didn't revolve around a number. Working towards a smaller size of pants instead of focusing on losing 20 pounds. I think this will work for me.

Have you ever been a homework captain here on the board? If yes, what is your advice to new members about whether they should volunteer to be a captain? (essay) N/A

As a member, what is your perspective on/what do you gain from homework assignments? N/A

If you have a tagline or saying that expresses who you are or your perspective on weight loss, what is it? (doesn’t have to be a tagline you use in your posts) (essay)

Well, I don't remember where I heard this or where I read it but I really thought it was something that we should really learn to believe. It's goes something like, "Your body, no matter what size or shape, is a temple. Learn to worship it." I really liked that.

Finally, if you could give one message to a new member reaching out for help with eating/living healthier, what would it be?

Learn to love yourself and your body. You have to make yourself one of the top priorities in your life, everyone will benefit from it!

_X_ Drink plenty of water (48 or more oz. per day).
_X_ Eat 5 servings or more per day of fruits & veggies.
_X_ Eat all or mostly whole grain carbs vs. white.
_X_ Portion control your food (weigh/measure/use visual cues for portion size).
_X_ Exercise at least 3 days a week.
_X_ Incorporate strength training into your workouts.
_X_ “Everything in moderation.”

___ Mini-meal concept (eating about every 3 hours vs. 3 meals a day).
_X_ Get enough sleep most nights (whatever 'enough' is for you).
___ Manage and cope with stress in a healthy way.

When you think of everything you have read and learned on the board, what 2-3 concepts/thoughs/lessons have stuck with you most? Just started...

Everything counts.

There isn't any one "right" way to do this, everyone has to find what works best for their own bodies. You have to really want to make changes or they won't stay with you.

Have you ever been a homework captain here on the board? If yes, what is your advice to new members about whether they should volunteer to be a captain? (essay) I did it at one point last year. The best piece of advice I could offer is to remeber that the point of the homework is to maker us aware of our habits etc. on a daily basis. Not every assignment has to be life changing, they can be fun little breaks also.

As a member, what is your perspective on/what do you gain from homework assignments?

The assignments keep me aware of what I'm doing, Sometimes you learn a lot, sometimes you pass on what you have already learned, either way it keeps me focussed in on where I need to be.

If you have a tagline or saying that expresses who you are or your perspective on weight loss, what is it? (doesn’t have to be a tagline you use in your posts) (essay)There is no luck except where there is discipline.

Finally, if you could give one message to a new member reaching out for help with eating/living healthier, what would it be? Take it a small step at a time, if you overwhelm yourself it will only frustrate.

First Name: Kathy

Age: 34

Location: Southern California

Journey Began: About 3 years ago an acquaintance of mine had weight-loss surgery, and it really frightened me that she would feel that she had to go to such an extreme for her health. I started exercising and eating better and have continued.

Maintenance Began (if applicable):

Pounds Lost: I had a baby in November, so I have at this point broken about even.

Marital Status: married

Children/Ages: 6, 3, and 8 months

How long on the board (FTV’s KD board, if applicable, + this board)? 2 months

Have you met KD in person? When/where? no

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight go it on your own? (essay) I am a recovering weight-watcher. I learned some good things about balance and nutrition, but like the freedom of eating for health.

If you followed a commercial plan, what plan (WW, Atkins, etc.)?

If you did it on your own, what is/was the basic premise of your self-made plan? (essay) I now try to plan and decide what to eat based more on what my body needs rather than what I am craving.

Journey Began: Years ago. Previous Bulimic, then gained a whole lotta weight in recovery from self harming behaviors. Now trying to get it off to be healthy so I don't end up like my father (deceased from a long hx of heart diease).

Pounds Lost: Rollercoaster Up and down. 30 when being really good and then lose momentum.

Marital Status: Married 3 years this October

Children/Ages: - 2 WONDERFUL nieces ages 2 and 7 - My being overweight is a barrier to having kids. If I want kids I need to lose the weight immediately!

How long on the board (FTV’s KD board, if applicable, + this board)? Lurking right after it started on FTV. Posting shortly after that. From the beginning here.

Have you met KD in person? When/where? Chicago last year or is it 2 years already....I don't remember.

Did you follow a commercial plan to lose weight go it on your own? Yes I have tried and done well on WW, but then gave it up because something always seems to get in the way.

If you did it on your own, what is/was the basic premise of your self-made plan? I am doing better with a combination of KD's & everyone's healthy suggestions here and a combination of WW (keeping track of points).
