It's about Jamie Oliver visiting public schools around London to revise their lunch programs. I haven't seen it yet, but I have my TiVo set to record it.
I saw the one where he was trying to do the high school lunches and didn't make it so decided to start with kids earlier but agree it all really has to start at home. I think it's horrible about the parents and what they're feeding the kids. But I think food is done, in general, differently here than in England; they don't have all that much land so they can go driving and see crops like we can and get different foods from lots of different states (like citrus, for example, from Florida and California) and have to import stuff in general. I don't think I'd order stuff to sell in my grocery if no one much would buy it?

hehehehehe, my daughter (13) just got home from babysitting. I asked if she ate lunch, she said "well sort of". The family that she was babysitting wanted dino chicken nuggets and fries for lunch.....she said she ate about 2 of the nuggets and couldn't bring herself to eat any "chips" with it, and she knew there'd be healthier fare at home! She said that after watching Jamie Oliver yesterday and today, she couldn't bring herself to eat the processed nuggets and "chips"
YAY!!!!!!!!
Blessings,
Lori

Wow! My kids and Don and I have watched the two episodes that aired on Monday evening. My kids were SHOCKED that the kids didn't know what simple things like onions, celery and potatoes looked like. Those were items that my 1 and 2 year olds are bagging for me at the grocery store! WE talked about it today during school time, and my kids all were so sad at how the children in England are fed.....well, my Rachel (my 5 year old) said "we're lucky that the kids here in the United States don't eat like that, Momma". I told her that they do! I told her that many kids do.....when she heard Jamie talking to the nurse or diatician (don't remember her job title) about some children going for 6 weeks without a BM, she looked at me and said "Mommy, that must really hurt!" All 4 of my kids told me that they are so glad that we eat healthfully, and they are thankful for having friends and family that eat relatively healthy (although I was able to point out two family friends that eat very similarly to the children in England....Rachel's first response was "do they only poop once a month too?") If nothing else, this show has really had an impact on my children and their desire to eat healthfully! They also want to get rid of all the candy in the house (which has been sitting here since Christmas....uneaten.....). They also said that Jamie should come to America and do that in the schools here
Blessings,
Lori

Oh, phooey. We had some new carpeting installed yesterday, so all the furniture was out of the room, including the TV and satellite box. They didn't get reconnected till after 9 p.m., so I doubt I got the recording. Luckily, I set the Tivo for "season pass" meaning it should record the show whenever it's on. I'm gonna see it one way or another...
I caught some of it last night too. I thought it was very interesting and very sad too!
The message I got from it is that good nutrition has to start at home and that getting kids involved in cooking is what will help them the most in their willingness to try new foods and expand their palates.
Seemed like a good show and worth the time.

I caught this show more or less by accident last night. I had the tv on while chatting & did not want Emeril or Cash in the Attic so I put it on TLC. I wasn't really paying much attention at first but it began to catch my attention and looked very interesting. I will try to watch it on purpose next week I did not watch him a whole lot when he was on FN but he seems to have changed since becoming a parent.

I had never heard of it, but set the tivo to record it. I look forward to watching it.
And speaking of healthy lunches, I know that I've posted this website before, but it is worth posting again. It is a vegan website, but I have gotten SO many great ideas for my omnivore husband's lunches from this website. It has really helped me to think "outside the box" and I have also gone much more environmentally friendly with his lunches.....no more plastic bags and disposible stuff.....I have collected several pieces of plastic "boxes" and containers that are perfect lunch size containers, and they fit well in his lunchbox with his ice packs. He doesn't have access to a microwave or a refrigerator, so he eats a "cold lunch" every day. And for the first 2 years of his job (he's been with this job for 2 years and 2 months)he ate sandwiches, fruit, and veggies every day. For the past 2 months I've been trying to mix it up a bit using some the ideas from this website and he has really enjoyed these lunches. Now he isn't one to enjoy things that are meant to be hot, cold.....like the other day, I sent a piece of cold chicken....he ate it, but he's not crazy about cold chicken....but it added some variety. He wouldn't eat cold pizza or cold spaghetti, but he will eat different types of pasta cold, if I disguise them as pasta salads (by adding a few veggies, and maybe some dressing of some sort). We as a family love looking at that website daily to see what kinds of good things we can make for lunch, and pack in Daddy's lunches
Blessings,
Lori
