Heard something strange this weekend

I had lunch with an old friend Saturday. She said her dh was losing weight (15 lbs) thru Quick Weight Loss.

We were discussing breakfast and I told her I ate a banana as part of my breakfast every morning.

She said Quick Weight Loss does not allow her dh to eat bananas. I don't remember if it was just at breakfast or all the time. They say it inhibits weight loss Confused.

Anybody ever heard anything about bananas inhibiting weight loss?

From the American Dietetic Association:

Potassium: An All-Star
July 15, 2008

Athletes know to eat bananas when they get muscle cramps. Why? Because bananas are an excellent source of potassium.

Among other things, potassium helps your muscles contract, helps regulate fluids and mineral balance in and out of body cells and helps maintain normal blood pressure by blunting the effect of sodium.

Potassium is found in a wide range of foods, especially fruits like bananas and oranges, vegetables like tomatoes and spinach, as well as kidney beans and potatoes.

Make sure you’re getting enough potassium by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables every day.

From the Mayo Clinic:

Eat fruit at every meal. Apples, bananas, oranges, pears and berries are good sources of fiber.

And from the American Diabetes Association:

Whatever interesting origin the banana may hold, it's a healthy fruit worth including in your meal plan. Despite being erroneously called "fattening" and too high in sugar, a small banana only contains about 100 calories, which is not much more than a medium apple. Nor should it raise your blood glucose level too high. Bananas are one of the best sources of potassium.

Judy,

Through all my ups and downs of weight loss I have NEVER given up my daily banana. Weight Watchers allow them. It's still a fruit for pete's sake. Depending on the size, one might want to have only half of one. I refuse to give up my banana.

Another fad diet trick? Magic pills or magic bullets.

i am suspicious of any diet that prohibits a food. ok ok, i know you should not be eating chocolate cake for braekfast every morning, but to categorically deny me bananas????

after eating out at restaurants WAY TOO MUCH during the holidays, i returned to my old routine. except i have been adding bananas and grapefruit and pears as my snacks. in fact, if you pair a banana with a ff fudgesicle...it is pretty darn yummy. that has been my regular dessert --like a yummy fusion of chocolate and banana. since my adventure into eating more fruit, i found myself fitting into my old thin pants.

did you guys read the articles about the Banana diet, so popular in Japan? i was cracking up! japanese love fad diets. after the craze, the stores could not keep bananas on the shelves. I guess you could say they went "APE" for the diet (yuck yuck yuck)

i have done diets simialr to south beach. i cannot sustain it. i need my carbs or i feel deprived and i whine a lot.

Goals:
1. Enjoy life!
2. Be aware, be awake, pay attention.
3. One word 2010: faith

The name alone makes me think that whatever they are recommending is probably not the most sound nutritional advice. I've never heard of bananas inhibiting weight loss and I would have to wonder just how many bananas one would have to eat a day to see a significant slow down in weight loss.

I also looked at the recipes on their website. They are very South Beach looking. Any starchy recipes list "diet bread" as ingredients, and sugar products are Splenda, Equal, etc. Which explains the no banana thing-they want you to avoid sugar/starchy foods, even if it is fruit.

I love bananas, especially with some peanut butter on them, or cut up in cereal.

I have no specific goal(s) right now. I am trying to find the spiritual side of myself that I lost somewhere along the way.
