I canceled my gym membership this morning. The main reason is financial. I know $40/month may not seem like much, but in an effort to cut back on spending so we can finally move into a nicer home, I am looking for as many opportunities as possible.

I did struggle with this decision. But I realized that I get into spurts where I would go faithfully and then stop. When I figured out exactly how much I actually utilized the gym I decided it is not worth the money right now.

I spent some time this weekend thinking about why I wasn't going. Laziness of course was the first thing that popped into my mind, but the more I thought about it I realized-I do not enjoy going there. I did not like my workout, and as I mentioned in another post somewhere, I was uncomfortable using the free weight area. So, I have yoga DVD's, The Firm, and some other home workouts, as well as being able to get out in this beautiful weather and walk, walk, walk. I think that maybe some time down the road I may try out another gym-but not that one. There are at least 5 or 6 other places to try, but for now I want to just work out at home.

I feel relieved-not because I no longer have to work out-I am going to do that right here at home-but because I don't have to go there anymore, and I'm saving myself about $500/year.
I think the guilt is gone to over paying for something I was hardly ever using.

Jill

good for you jill! you based your decision on what is best for you--that is the most important thing!

Goals:
1. Stop thinking like a chronic dieter and start living to inspire.
2. HALT (hungry, anxious, lonely, tired) I will stop and tune in with myself should I experience these things, and respond with something healthy.
3. One word 2008: courage
4. Eat slow and mindfully.

Jill, those are tough decisions, but they have to be made, if there are other priorities in your life. Your own home, is a wonderful priority.

AND you know that there are other ways to get your exercise than going to the gym, As Sheltie said, there are the additional costs that we don't think of, gas, etc. So get out those walking boots, and get to walking, good for you!

Summer Challenge Goals:

1. Get out of the house and in the pool four days a week.
2. Schedule meals a week at a time.
3. five fruits and vegetables a day, along with water.

Sounds like it was a tough decision, Jill, but I think you made the right one. As long as you're committed to home workouts, I don't think your weight will pay the price. There are tons of resources out there for exercises you can do at home without equipment. You should have no trouble keeping things fresh. Good luck.

Not to mention to-gym/from-gym driving time/inconvenience.
