Hey guys,

I was just wondering if any of you have found a really good pedometer that is not super expensive. I know that McDonald's is giving one away right now but i am not sure if it is very good quality. Plus I hardly ever eat there Wink

Please let me know if you have found good ones and if you have had success in using them every day. Do you wear yours all day orjust to work out? Have you had any problems with "missed" steps. I heard that if you have a tummy, it can really mess the sensor up?

My workplace just finished a 6-week wellness program where they gave any employee who signed up a free pedometer. We were to wear them all day every day and log the number of steps we walked each day, how many veggies and fruits we ate, etc. The pedometer is obviously a cheap one (I work for the Govt--trust me, we have no money to buy supplies so I don't know where they got the money to give away free peds) but it did work pretty well at first. Before the 6-week program was over, however, it had stopped working correctly.

Luckily for me, I'd already bought myself a pedometer (Sportsline at Target, about $19-27) a month or two before the wellness program started, so I switched to that one. It has a MUCH more dependable clip (the free one was constantly falling off when I went to the bathroom) but, since my exercise of choice at the time was walking and WATP walkaerobics, the results were mixed. Some days it just seemed like it wasn't registering all my steps.

My experience with these 2 pedometers has led me to believe that, if you're jogging, you'll probably not have a lot of problems with missed steps because the "jolt" of jogging is hard enough to register on the ped. However, with walking, elliptical and other types of lower impact exercise, the accuracy of the ped may be questionable...at least some of the time.

Personal Healthy Habits Challenge - 10/1 to 12/31/08:
1. Exercise: Get back to consistently working out 3-5 X week.
2. Food: Get back to consistently preparing healthy lunches for the week with increased veg servings.
3. Behavior: Reduce intake of sweets.

The New Lifestyles booklet includes a "How To Wear Your Step Meter" section, with photos.

On the tummy issue, they say:

"DON'T wear it near the middle where your tummy can tip if forward."

"DO wear it closer to your side, where your tummy won't interfere."

Hello!

Just an FYI! There have been reports of returns of the pedometers, because some are too sensitive. In other words, it records the movement of the hip and not necessarily an actual STEP. For the suggested retail of the Adult Happy Meal=salad and a bottle of water w/pedometer of $5.99, it is not a bad deal. In our area the salad is $3.99 + water at $1.27 = $5.26 making the pedometer a whopping $0.73. Of course that does not include tax if you have it.

I have had one of each, one that was too sensitive, and one that really works well.
I guess it's up to you to decide if you like the combo and it's pricing.

At any rate, I hope you enjoy the salad!!!!

Barbara :-)

PS I'm Ronald McDonald's Assistant when he comes to South Florida, so I eat A LOT of McDonald's!!!!

I recently bought a genuine YAMAX pedometer, sold under the New Lifestyles brand name.

Here's a review of pedometers:
http://walking.about.com/cs/measure/tp/pedometer.htm

I got one for my dad from Sharper Image last year and it was terrible. Missed steps like crazy and no matter where he placed it, unless he was jogging, it didn't work well. Bottom line, do some research because there does seem to be a big difference in quality/accuracy.

A friend recently got her 'free' pedometer from McDonalds. She has used it all this week and recieved it with the purchase of a salad. Not a bad deal.
She took it for a test 'drive' yesterday, and logged in 7000 steps on her way home from downtown (about 60-75 minutes).
I think it is worth a try.
