Finally after 6 months my doctor has decided that I can try and manage blood sugar without medication. I am still two-tenths of a point away from being listed diabetic on my hemoglobin A1C. My insulin levels on this test came down ten points. He said if I could continue the diet I am on; I could stay off medication. If I was going to go back to my old eating patterns; He was going to put me on the medication. So I guess I am staying eating more low carb. Roll Eyes
On the bright side I lost five pounds in the last three months. My scale broke so I had no way to tell.
I am happy with the way this turned out. I really didn't want to go on meds. It is just that the low carb lifestyle irritates my IBS some. Better than the side affect of the medication he would have put me on. Smiler

Sorry I haven't been on much, but without going into details.... It has been crazy.

Congrats!!!! Anytime you can do something with your diet then take a synthetic med the better!!! It isn't always easy to follow those diets. I have 2 one for renal failure and one for acid between the 2 there is very little I can have at all not even foods normally considered healthy. It was all very frustrating. Now I have made a list of foods that bother me and how much then I try to see if smaller amounts will still bother me. So journaling would be a good place to start. My son was born with IBS- he took milk thisle and now dosn't have many problems with it. Check your health food store. Good plan!! Stay healthy and have some fun with different menus. Several of the books that someone mentioned earlier are at my local library. That way you can check out several and see which work best without spending a lot of money for books you don't like or won't use.

I suggested this book to someone else either today or yesterday.

"The Diabetic's Healthy Exchanges Cookbook" by JoAnna M. Lund. She also has a website:

It says it is Real food for people living in the real world with diabetes. I don't have diabetes but my father, sister & best friend do & I bought this book to try to help them & I have found that I really like the recipes in it for myself also.

You also mentioned IBS. I do have that but it is under control at the present time.

There is also a book called Eating for IBS that gave me a lot of information. I didn't try to follow all their rules because it was too restrictive but it did give me some guidelines and I crafted my own eating plan.

I have found that while solid chocolate causes me severe pain I can eat things made with cocoa powder with no problems.

I was raised in a very meat and potatoes kind of way. The fiber isn't the problem. I kind of went more whole grains a long time ago. It is the salads and stir-fry. Lots of veggies and little starch gives me indigestion and irritates my IBS somewhat. A friend told me that goes away so I guess it is just a matter of sticking it out.
