A news wire story today states "that 22 percent of Americans could name all five Simpson family members, compared with just one in 1,000 people who could name all five First Amendment freedoms."
Here is the 1st Amendment
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The right to bear arms is the 2nd Amendement, it isn't covered in the 1st Amendment.
There are more than 5 Amendements, there are 10 just in the Bill of Rights.
Opps! I had not clicked on the link and was thinking first five, not five in the first one.

That statistic may be a bit skewed though, because I think the American Idol voters use Chicago logic in voting...."Vote early and vote often." There's really no mechanism in American Idol to keep someone from voting more than once.

Thank you, Dawn. That makes me feel much better! The traffic reporter had actually suggested that we vote for our president using the Cingular network. My first thought was how do you control the number of votes per person.

You're right...and some people are OBSESSIVE about calling over and over again as many times as possible during the voting period. As much of an American Idol fan as I am, I could count the number of times I've called in a vote over the several-year run of AI on one hand.

This goes even further off topic, but I was listening to the radio on the ride to work yesterday when the traffic reporter, in what was supposed to be the clever repartee with the DJ, was telling us that there are more people voting in American Idol than turn out for political voting. (Shudder)

LOL...it IS scary, isn't it?
I used to listen to a radio show where they would do a Jeopardy kind of trivia game with people on the street and it was STARTLING how many people didn't know who their President was or what the capital of the State they lived in was or just very basic information like that.

I remember when the Olympics were coming to Atlanta there was a phone # you could call to order tickets but you had to live in the United States to order them. Someone from New Mexico called in and the operator would not sell them any tickets. The operator kept telling the caller they were not in the U.S. The caller finally got a supervisor on the phone and the supervisor would not sell them any tickets either. There is a lot I do not know about the good ol US of A but I do know that New Mexico is one of the states.

I read that earlier today. Having been a graduate assistant in a university Political Science department, I'm not surprised. You wouldn't believe some of the things I heard from undergrad. students (really from some of the other graduate students too.)
