ok. I've been seeing a lot of concern/panic about "how to handle the holidays" in terms of food/eating. So, my homework is going to try to get a better comfort level with food going.

Think about something you've been craving. Really craving. If its more than one thing, even better (this is actually a "week-long" homework).

I want you to incorporate one serving of whatever "not-so-good choice" food you've been craving into your diet, every day, this week.

If you haven't been craving anything in particular, I'd like you to do something similar with buying yourself the "best" single-serving thing you can. Treat yourself.

I want you to sit down with it, serve it to yourself, as if it were a treat, a pleasure, *not* a "bad" food, not an evilness.

Think about your responses to this. Did the food taste as good as you'd anticipated?

Is there a higher-quality version of the food you've been craving? Try and find a serving of that, the next day. For example, Hostess twinkies, maybe. You try a twinkie today, and realise "blech" that didn't taste at all like what I was expecting. So you go to Whole Foods, and find something in their bakery department.

Sometimes when we demonize food/make it off-limits, it becomes tastier in our minds than it really is. Its ok to have something if you make it the best you can, and eat it publicly and in an aware fashion, enjoying it.

I'd like it if everyone could incorporate something they don't usually eat, but do crave, for a week. Even if it means that you maintain for a week, rather than lose.

We are about eating healthy, and moderation. One piece of chocolate rather than a whole box.

(And I won't yell at you if you decide to only do this homework today, but I'd rather see people try to do it consistently over the course of the week).

OH LINDA, I didn't know it was out! Very cool. I have a coupon for 20% off at Border's, I know where I'm headed.

I just had a cup of "doctored" coffee. That's what I miss most. I don't HAVE to have it, but, I sure like it.

I don't even have coffee most days since I'm home. It seemed to be a work related thing - or eating breakfast out thing.

Just for some balance... (for any lurkers out there... Smiler)

This homework wouldn't work well for me. The more candy I eat, the more I want... Smiler I have to make a really good effort to eat really clean during the week. Some people need to indulge their cravings everyday... I'd end up over indulging!

But on the other hand, deprivation and denile don't work either... Every person needs to find the balance that works for them.

I'm going to try an apple pie recipe this week end.

Cheese enchiladas this weekend, then Smiler

With whole wheat tortillas, and I'll cut the fat down in some of the cheeses.

LOL, this isn't exactly the point of your homework Cate but I have been craving some really GOOD citrus fruit (especially grapefruit). We have had "slim pickins" in this area lately in the citrus fruit department (obviously). The grapefruit that I purchased the other day were small & bitter. Oh well, at least I'm craving something healthy!

I started this homework on Sunday. My dd got a bunch of my favorite chocolate candy for Halloween. She isn't a huge fan of chocolate (she'd rather have the sugary candy stuff) so we split 1 fun sized piece per day. It adds about 50 calories to my day but I have been savoring each bite and it's been well worth it!

I also feel like I'm not depriving myself during halloween season by not having any candy.

There are only a few more chocolate things left so it will be over this week.

I've been itching for cheesecake. One of my plans for today is to make a batch of mini cheesecakes, the kind made with vanilla wafers in small baking cups. Then I'm going to freeze them. They fit the bill of cheesecake craving, and are only a couple of bites.

Otherwise, I've kind of already started this homework last week. I have been eating 5 almond m&m's a day for the last week, just for something sweet. Neither hubby or I could find a bag of snack size servings, so he bought be what he could find. So, I've been carefully rationing them out. I don't have any desire to eat more than my five at a time.
