I found a Whole Food and got some Steel Cut Oats out of the bulk section. How do you all cook yours?

BTW I probably won't shop much there in the future....they were very pricey, especially in the produce section. I heard Trader Joes is better priced.

TJ's shines in terms of pricing of their organic produce, although sometimes they have absolutely nothing. That being said, I love my CSA and the farmer's market.

I haven't found much organic fruit at the megamart, although they are getting better.

In terms of the steel cut oats, I follow Alton's method, with occasional changes:

sometimes when toasting the oats, I'll add nuts.
you don't have to use butter, you can do it dry or use an oil.
I'll also add fruit to mine, either dried, at the middle, or fresh/frozen at the end.

He basically toasts the oats, then adds boiling water to the toasted oats.

For the standard (no-presoak, McCann's) stovetop method, the ratio is 4 cups of boiling water to 1 cup of oatmeal.

It's supposed to take about 30 minutes of simmering, but I make a smaller batch, so it takes me less time. (20-25 min?)

I serve mine with warmed milk, honey, and cinnamon.

Here is a recipe from Alton Brown (Good Eats) that dd loves.

We shop at Whole Foods for a few things we can't get at a regular grocery. Like fresh ground honey roasted peanut butter.

I soak them over night and then simmer for 30-40 mins on the stove. I've found that they need way more water/milk than rolled oats.

I soak 1/2 c. (dry) in 1 cup of water and 1 cup of milk (mixed together).

I put them on the stove for 30 mins and go exercise!

I haven't found the produce at Trader Joes to be particularly better quality or less expensive than the local megamart. Smiler

I do like their cheese selection and the Kashi Brands and TJ brands of cold cereal are cheaper than the megamart...
