The special project that I've been getting up at unGodly hours for the past two days will be showing up on your evening news tonight (if not already)...unless, of course, the naming of the new Pope usurps our time in the spotlight!
If you hear about USDA and a pyramid on the news, that's the project I have been involved with. I was there this morning when the Secretary of Agriculture made the announcement and Denise Austin was there to give a peppy speech as well about eating right and staying active. I didn't get to meet her but, holy cow, she looks AMAZING in person. She was blonder today than I've ever seen her, and you would never guess she has been in the fitness industry for 20 years!

Not speaking in any official capacity here, but the other orange veggie that sprang to mind is squash. I'm not a squash eater myself, but I know there's at least one (butternut? acorn?) that has orange flesh. Guess that would qualify?
I believe cantaloupe is good for some of the same vitamins and nutrients that orange veggies are so, while it's a fruit not a veggie, it might help toward meeting those needs.

I got my pyramid to print today. Among other recommendations was a 2 c. per week orange veggie suggestion. I'm trying to think of orange veggies...I can think of carrots, orange bell peppers and sweet potatoes (although I never really count potatoes as veggie servings...maybe I should!). Others?? I can't quite imagine getting in 2 c. of these a week.
Keep trying to get your pyramid if you haven't succeeded...it's interesting.
when I tried clicking on any of the link buttons from the pyramid yesterday, they were all blank pages. I figured they didn't have the whole page up yet?
Blessings,
Lori

Yup. I heard someone in the office say this morning that, at some point yesterday, there were something like a thousand hits per second on the MyPyramid.gov website. We heard from a lot of people (including Congressmen) who could not get on the website because it was so swamped after the announcement yesterday.

Ok Sheri -- -I saw it last night... and did you design the graphics /?? What did you do (sorry that sounds kind of callus -) Just very interested in what your part was --- being it was all top secret !!!!!!!
P.S. I just read the previous replies and I see you already answered this .... sorry duuurrr next time I'll read before writing !!!

I was only involved in ancillary ways. First, I assisted with publication of food guidance materials for public comment last year (what they unveiled yesterday was shaped by those public comments). This week, I helped prepare for the media event (where the new pyramid was announced by the Secretary) by taking calls from the press the day before the event and by registering and escorting press at the event yesterday.
I didn't have anything to do with the graphic itself or the science behind it, but the people who do work in the same building as I.

Nope, you won't see me. I was sitting behind all the cameras. I was checking in all the media so I did get to meet Sally Squires, who the Washington Post readers among you will recognize as the Lean Plate Club lady.

I heard about the changes in the food pyramid, and thought I just got the one from January memorized. But yeah, on this front, it is really helping people get their food priorities in line.
It's never too late to get it right.
