I am planning on ordering some whole grain (probably sprouted grain) bagels and english muffins from my coop this next month. Was wondering what your favorite brands are?
Normally I make these things myself, but it is simply too hot to do it right now, so I'm going to spend the money to get my freezer filled with some healthy bread products. They are WAY too expensive to buy at the grocery store (I'm NOT paying $3.50 or more per 6 bagels and english muffins), and my coop offers some great deals on these.
Blessings,
Lori

The brands that are available to me through the co-op are:
alvarado bakery Garden of Eatin' Food for Life French Meadow La Brea Bakery Pacific Bakery
When we lived in our old house, my husband worked right around the corner from the Oroweat/Van De Kamps thrift store, and we bought all of our bagels/english muffins/boboli there, for never more than $1.69 a package. And if you bought more than 7 items, you'd get something for free, and if you filled your card ($25 in purchases), you got $3 in free items (two free items). It was a fantastic deal, and I always got great whole grain stuff there, but it's just too far to drive and I can't justify the cost of gas. Which is why I thought I'd go through the coop. The oroweat brand is the only brand in the grocery stores that I trust to actually be WHOLE grain, and they don't use preservatives....BUT they are $3.95+ in the grocery stores, and that price is ridiculous!!!!!!
I guess I will just start down the list from the coop (and I'll call Whole Foods, Fer, to find out what brands they carry).
Blessings,
Lori

I don't know if we have orowheat here, but they do have Dempster's whole grain breads and buns/bagels/english muffins. I buy them when I buy stuff as they don't have any white flour in them.
Their website says: Breads made with whole grain flour use all 3 parts of the grain and provide you with all the goodness and taste of the whole grain. On the other hand, breads made with white flour as their main ingredient (as most brands of grain breads are) use only 1 part of the grain and provide you with only part of the nutrients and taste of the grain.
Dempster's WholeGrains. THE bread made with whole grain flour.
Is this what orowheat is down there? Have you ever seen Dempsters where you are?
I hardly ever eat bagels anymore. I regularly buy Oroweat whole wheat english muffins though. After label comparison, they look like the best choice. I do miss that holey texture that Thomas's have though.
BTW ww english muffins makes great hamburger buns. I put a healthy-portioned size burger or Gardenburger on it, and it looks HUGE.

I don't eat bagels that much anymore.. I don't eat english muffins too much either, but when I do by english muffins I like the orowheat whole wheat brand.
Even though, I know the fiber and whole grain count is not good, I still love the sourdough english muffins. I haven't had one of those in ages.

I don't eat bagels anymore but, when I did, I bought the Giant (my local grocery store chain) brand. I've tried one or two of the frozen brands (like Lender's) but can't say I cared much for them. I can't remember if I tried the Sara Lee ones or not--I seem to recall them being quite a bit larger than other brands.
I keep a package of either Thomas' wholegrain or whole wheat English muffins in my freezer. I love them toasted with peanut butter for a quick breakfast or light snack.
