I know what cookies are but am not good at explaining it so I looked this up for you.
I know KD does not allow pop-up ads on her site.
"Cookies are a necessary evil at some sites. They store little chunks of information about you that the sites use to customize themselves to your preferences.
For example, you may have picked some color scheme that's pleasing to you. The site plants a cookie on your computer that tells it to switch to that scheme the next time you return to the site. Cookies also can hold things such as user names, information about your browser settings and so on. They may even tell the site what ads to show you or what sort of pop-up you may be likely to respond to.
Depending on your paranoia level, you may not care to have Web sites know such stuff. It doesn't hurt to kill those cookies, but it means you'll have to fill in info about yourself next time you visit."
Like having to log in every time you visit a site instead of having your computer "remember my password".
This is a much more in depth article about what they are and what they do.
