My cousin, who was smoking, drinking and 175 pounds overweight, recently had gastric bypass surgery. He was in such bad shape that there was no time to let him do it on his own. His pre-surgery lifestyle included a fridge in the bedrooom. I spoke with my grandma today, and he is not doing well mentally/emotionally. He does not like the fact that he had to give up his old ways so drastically....no baby steps, so to speak.

For those of you with personal experience...how does this surgery affect the family, and what can we do to help? His wife is still very heavy and is doing nothing to help. He has 2 kids, normal weight. None of the family lives near him. He is only 35, and it was the surgery or death.

Nancy,
I don't know of anyone in our group that has had this surgery but the 3 Fat Chicks have a forum dedicated to this subject so maybe you can get some help over there:
