I'm reading The Home Energy Diet. It's about home energy usage and ways to reduce your energy consumption. I'm learning a lot about how the various systems of the house work (and don't work), and the things I can do to lower those darn bills. The book is not an exciting read, but it's very informative. I notice a lot more now...like how it's so very cold in the freezer section of the supermarket, which means the freezers are cooling the store as well as the food! I'll bet that extra energy use adds up to higher grocery bills for us shoppers.
Fall goals: 1. Bike 40-50 miles a week 2. Prepare new garden bed for next season 3. Heal my back

Reilly's Luck It is about the life of a little boy starting when he is 4 years old. His mother is a prostitute & she left him with a farm family but the farmers wife get sick so he takes the boy back to his mother. She orders her hen-pecked, weak-kneeded current lover to "take the kid out into the blizzard & lose him". The man can't do it and takes the kid to a down on his luck grambler friend of his & begs him to let the kid spend the night in his hotel room while he is out gambling that night. The prostitute (who doesn't know the kid is still alive) & her lover leave town. The gambler is angry but his luck has changed & he had won a bundle so he keeps the kid & puts him thru school. The rest of the book follows them in their travels. The mother makes another appearance & causes trouble. This is one that I like to re-read.
"Live your life so that you are not afraid to sell the family parrot to the town gossip."

I'm currently (occasionally) reading William Faulkner's "Light In August".
After that, I am going to read the Eugene O'Neil play "Long Day's Journey Into Night".
According to the back cover, O'Neil describes it as a "play of sorrow, written in tears and blood". The cover also states that it won a Pulitzer Prize.

I'm reading The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova. I'm tempted to say it's The DaVinci Code with vampires, but that's a little too simple. But it is about a young couple racing against time to find proof that the historical figure on whom the Dracula legends are based was actually a vampire. Don't know if I'd recommend it -- it's a heavy read, both figuratively and literally, at 650+ pages. I'll let you know when I've finished it if it's worth the trouble.

I know I read The Deep End of the Ocean but for the life of me cannot remember what is what about so it must not have had much impact. I'll have to go look for the book and refresh my memory. My nightstand is piled high right now. Can't seem to really get into any books. I started A Million Little Pieces a million days ago and haven't made it to the second chapter. I am still working my way through the Rhonda Britton book, I started the Davinci Code two nights ago(the beginning is dragging, I hope it gets better), and I have a book called the Reenchantment of Everyday Life by Thomas Moore which is good but I have to be in a certain mood to read it. I'll try to remember to post again when I finish the book to give you an idea of how well I liked it in the end. quote: I just finished Deep End Of The Ocean (by a Madison author, Mitchard) The book was really hyped (Oprah's pick) but I was not really taken with it. I liked it ok, but had an easy time putting it down.
I read that in hardback, back when it was first named as an Oprah Book Club book. I thought that it was quite good for a first novel, but not my favorite read of the year or anything. I had a coworker back then who heard me talk about it and asked to borrow it when I was done. She absolutely HATED the book. She is a mother and could not even DREAM of neglecting her child the way the character in the book did. I guess that confused me because I can quite disagree with a character in a book or movie and still find the book or movie enjoyable. On the other hand, I hated Anna Quindlen's Black & Blue so perhaps that is a similar situation as my coworker's hatred of the Mitchard book.

We are off to the pool today and I am going to begin Anne Tyler's, Back When We Were Grownups.
