I wanted to post my progress since restarting my weight loss campaign on April 27. It has been 4 full weeks, and almost a month now. I have been keeping my weekly calorie count average right around 1500 calories per day, and have gotten to the right proportions of fat/protein/carbs finally (I'm trying to get to a 25-30% fat, 25% protein, and 50-55% carbs). I have been staying active, although my exercise definitely isn't where it was 2 years ago when I lost my weight before. I am sure that once my gym opens on July 1, it should get easier for me. But my food is going great! And the final result of this first month is that I have lost 6 pounds.
Blessings,
Lori

3/21/05 ~ On Spring Break! Thank you - Thank you - Thank you!!! I have to say that everyone has been so supportive and fantastic here. I'm so glad I found all of you!!! You all are helping me to be accountable and to keep my health a priority. I know that I alone am responsible for what I put in my mouth, for the exercise I do each day, for relaxation, meditation, yoga, and keeping my stress level in check. As caretakers and helpers it's sometimes hard for us to set limits, boundaries, and to take care of ourselves first. Someone I work with said it best, "If you don't take care of yourself - what good are you to others you take care of?" We need to carve out time to keep our health a #1 priority! So far so good with the goals I set for myself when I first came here on 3/4/05. It's getting easier to squeeze more fruits and veggies into my diet (which is the biggest "tweak" I needed.) I'm also upping my exercise to 90 minutes a day, mainly because I need the stress relief from the job and school combo. I've done it slowly and sensibly because I don't want to sabotage my efforts by doing too much too fast and hurting myself. I've been staying on track with my health goals - have my annual physical next week, got my annual mammogram today, etc. because those are priorities. One day a week I plan the menus for the week and incorporate KD's recipes from Cooking Thin, and other healthy recipes from the collection. The whole family enjoyed the Lazy Man's Lasagne last week(yum!)I've been craving a good onion ring, and so I'm going to try pg. 182 the Buttermilk-Battered Baked Onion Rings as one of the recipes. KD's recipes are so awesome, tasty, and EASY, and they fit my crazy lifestyle too, which is great! Other cookbooks I've been "recipe testing" are Eat More Weigh Less by Dr. Dean Ornish; Everyday Cooking with Dr. Dean Ornish; The New American Diet by Sonya Connor, MS, RD; and Low-Fat Living by Robert Cooper PhD, and Leslie Cooper. So far the fam has enjoyed everything we've cooked. (I'm trying 3-4 new recipes per week). I also like the "unfried" chicken recipe in In the Kitchen with Rosey, by Rosey Daley. It cures my occasional hankering for fried chicken. I hope that everyone is having a great Spring! Thank you again for your words of encouragement! More later, XOXOX Kiki

I encourage you to consider revising your goals if they seem impossible. Setting yourself up that way won't get you to your goals but setting some intermediate goals will. How about: 1. Drink 2x as much water as I normally do 5 days this week 2. Skipping snacking after 7:30 on weekdays 3. Exercise 3 days (or whatever is a moderate increase over what you are currently doing) this week. Or just exercise X number of days this week without big worries about getting the hour in. I know for me that those sorts of 'no excuses' goals are the perfectionist in me rearing it's ugly head and it doesn't do a darn thing to serve my success. Also, you might want to include some sort of reward in your goals. That is very effective for lots of folks. Peg

I have decided to use this forum as a means to be accountable for my weight gain/loss. Current weight: 225 pounds. Weight before bar examination: 190 That's 35 pounds gained in 7 months. Goal: return to comfortable weight of 165 Mini goals: 1. drink 8 glasses of water a day 2. no eating past 7:30pm. No excuses. 3. exercise at least one hour/day. No excuses. At this point, achieving my goal seems impossible. But, I am hopeful that a little weight loss will improve my optimism.

I eat pretty healthy, but with midterm exams stress snacking gets out of control. I'm keeping fresh veggies in the fridge and have lightly steamed asparagus with lemon in place of the mindless snacks. My husband and I go on destination walks -- our last one was 15 miles round trip -- and if we get too tired we always have pocket change and can catch a city bus home. I exercise six days a week and keep things fresh by playing competitive sports. One competitive walk I entered with 11 other teammates was 125 miles over 24 hours. I've participated two years in a row and it is lots of fun. Each person walks twice in the 24 hour period, between 7-10 miles each time. The money goes to charity and there are something like 400 teams competing each year. I also enter other sports competitions to keep me interested year-round. Our culinary goals are to have a planning session each week to plan out the week's menus, try new healthy recipes, and figure out what needs to be pre-prepped to fit into our hectic schedules. We had our first session last week and the meals were great, we haven't been tempted to buy fast food, and we're eating much healthier. I'm not giving up anything -- especially chocolate -- I have miniature bars and limit myself to one to get a taste without overdoing. My current weight goals consist of dropping one BMI point a month (6-7 pounds) which seems healthy and very doable to me. I'm not going to obsess about the scale because I know with weight training that I've added to my aerobics that my body composition is changing. My clothes definitely fit looser and I can see a real change in my endurance and daily energy level. Thanks for listening and keep up all your great work! More later, XOXOXO Kiki

Well, on Saturday, I think I overdid it! I got a really bad blister on the back of my heel (the same foot of the leg that I had injured my knee), so on Monday I couldn't wear shoes (the blister had ripped completely open and started bleeding while walking on Saturday--we did another 1 hour/4 + mile walk) so I couldn't walk on Monday. Then yesterday, my friends husband had either 2 or 3 surgeries that he had to work in, so we didn't get to walk yesterday, but today we walked (it started sprinkling on us a little bit) for about 40 minutes. Her husband watched all of the kids (mine and hers). Tomorrow we won't be able to go walking, but I plan on doing my watp tomorrow here at home. I HAVE to! I've already taken 3 days off this week We can't wait for the gym to open!!!! I will be able to get back to daily workouts, regardless of whom is with me! I tend to make myself accountable to whomever is at the gym at 5 AM....I found at our old gym that when my workout partner wasn't there, and I missed a couple of days, all of the regulars were asking what happened to me, and why I wasn't around, etc. So they did notice when I was and wasn't there....I'm sure that will happen at this gym also, if I set a regular schedule. Oh, I can't wait!!!! Sometimes we may get a couple of workouts in in one day....if I go early in the AM and then again with my friend (the one that I'm walking with right now). I will make sure that I'm not overworking though. I did want to report though, that I didn't lose anything this past week despite walking over 16 miles/4 hours, so I decided that I am going to use fitday.com for a while and see how my intake is. Today I was SUPER conscious of what I ate (although I'm not sure if I remembered everything tonight when I recorded it), and I didn't do too badly. I was right under 500 calories (IF I remembered everything, which I think I did). My guess is that I've been getting around 2000 or so calories, so I want to keep my intake right now right around 1500-1600 and see how it goes at that level. I can usually lose slowly at that level. I will see how my hunger levels are though. Oh, and I have added the link to my fitday journal in my signature line, so if you guys want to see how/what I'm doing, you can
Blessings,
Lori

You can do it Lori! Post to us about your exercise next week when you are on your own. We'll help hold you accountable : )

Thank you for your prayers! My knee is still a little sore today, but nothing like yesterday. I was able to go walking today, and once I got moving in the cold and the joint warmed up, it felt fine. We only walked for 25 minutes (the path we took was shorter on the way home than on the way out), but it is still 25 minutes more than I would have gotten if I hadn't gone Tomorrow we will walk for an hour again....and I'm hoping we can get in 4.4 miles....I'm hoping to get just a little further in that hour than we did on Monday If not, we'll shoot for that next week on saturday when we go for an hour. I'm feeling great, and am already seeing improvements in my body (not my outside, but my insides....my fatigue is CONSIDERABLY better, and I'm sleeping SOOOO much better! I haven't woken up with puffy circles under my eyes for two days now. That's a record recently! I've been waking up looking HORRIBLE!!!)
Blessings,
Lori

Thanks so much!
Prayers are on their way. I'm sorry that it's giving you so much trouble : (
