Are you still keeping a few holiday cookies around the house because they are too "special" or yummy to toss?

Leftover candy? Chocolate?

What about feeling the need to eat out a bit too often because ____.

Whatever your hidden, leftover holiday calorie stash-- post about it here and let it go.

I gave away most everything on New Year's Day. BUT I still have about 6 handmade caramels that are not a huge deal to me most of the time, but in a difficult moment they could become all important. I HATE to toss them as they come from my mom and I knew them so well as a child. Giving 6 away seems ridiculous. (Actually I meant to toss them in the goodie bags we gave out on New Years, but forgot.)
What to do?
Trash is picked up tomorrow. I will leave the computer and toss them while I can.
Amazing - the energy I put sometimes put into these things.

My MIL sends us assorted "goodies" every Christmas. Even living 600 miles away she manages to get them to us every year. (SHE's on weight watchers and still makes them and sends them to ME who she knows is trying to lose weight..but oh, that's antoher topic.)

Anyway, we got ours last weekend when she sent them with my parents to deliver. I took off for FL so I wasn't too worried about them. Of all the things she sends, DH really only eats one kind of the cookies so Sunday I asked him "Of that stuff your mom sent, are you going to eat anything other than the M&M cookies?"... He said "I don't know, why?" (I KNOW he's not going to, she has been sending us this stuff for over 10 years and he NEVER eats anything other than the M&M cookies) So I said "Because, I'm going to either take everything else to work or throw it away because I don't need it here." and he was looking at me like "How could you?" He's the one that asked me Sunday after I got home "Honey are you bloated?" yet he has to ask why I don't want assorted sugary caloric treats in the house???

PLEASE!

Dawn

I had a very Denise moment yesterday (sorry, Denise, but I always think of you when I'm throwing away food or thinking about it). I said something in my yoga class about how I had thrown away 2 dozen cookies. Everyone looked appalled. I said, "Well, I would have eaten them if I hadn't thrown them out." And they all said, "Yeah..."

Well, I never asked for 2 dozen cookies for Christmas, they didn't look that good, and most of them would have been stale by the time we finished them anyway. I mean, what family of 2 people really NEEDS that many cookies.

Still glad I threw them out. Any other time of year, homemade cookies DO seem exciting, but a few days after Christmas, I was so sick of sugar that I had no desire to even think about eating them.

Half and half down the drain, coffee maker put back in closet and back to black tea in the AM. Also found and tossed some smoked fontina cheese and the crackers that go with.

A humorous little update on the office kitchen situation -- just went in there for some tea. A few holiday remnants are still out, but I noticed that about a third of the chocolate cake was in the trash! That gave me a little extra willpower to pass up "just one" chocolate truffle...

I'm back on track. Had two bread cubes dipped in cheese last night. It was a wine tasting, and I had 12 sips of wine. Have NO idea if that is 1/4 glass? Half a glass?

Ate a REALLY moderate dinner.

I was in charge of dessert and made KD/Karen's Angel Food Cake. Was sort of worried as I put it in the oven and realized that only 8 egg whites made it into the mixer and 1 got left on the counter... but it came out GREAT! Served with defrosted berries and whipped cream or cool whip.

Ate more than enough servings of fruits/vegs yesterday and had a good work out, too.

LOL!

People will post, "I put the kids to bed and sit down and 'relax' and then I just want to eat and eat." Sometimes I wonder if "relax" is a code name for some other ways of "relaxing"...

Dawn, I got some Godiva also and it is hidden from DH so that I can enjoy it when the need hits!!!

I forgot that the day I went back to work there was a box of thin mints on my desk. In two days I wolfed down about 10 of them so on the second night I ran after the custodian to throw them away. I offered them to him first and surprisingly he said no, so in the trash they went!!! I'm sure he thought I was a little wacky Big Grin

I have a box of "goodies" my MIL sent to us through my mom. She makes all this same stuff every year.

In past years, we tossed it because both MIL and FIL were such chain smokers that the food tasted like smoke and it was disgusting.

Well, this year MIL and FIL both are trying to quit because of her aneurysm, so the food doesn't taste like smoke. However, in the whole box I only like one kind of cookie, so it isn't too bad.

DH got me some Godiva chocolates and I am not going to throw those out. I will eat the chocolates sparingly (it isn't a huge amount.)

Shortly after Christmas DH said "throw it all out" so I got the garbage can ready and he yelled..."NO" so I did not. Right before New Years Eve he said to go ahead and I did...all that candy and cookies (even the ones I slaved over). I could not bring myself to throw out un-opened chocolate so I bagged it up and took it to school for the staff room and it was gone in a day!

Today I threw out the leftover chinese from New Years Eve which neither of us touched.

While putting away Christmas stuff today I found more candy and it promptly went in the garbage!!!

Yesterday I bought a small piece of dark chocolate at Starbucks for my afternoon craving. I didn't need it and it is still in my purse!

Can't say that I had a stash - I'm the only one who would eat different kinds of cookies - so I don't bake. The only food I received for Christmas was a small box of what I suspected was/is chocolate covered cherries. I had ONE and discovered I was right. I don't like them, so I've been looking for someone to give them to - they were homemade.

I've been sick this weeki and hardly ate on Thursday and didn't have much yesterday, but…

Dh's potato chips have been calling my name in the middle of the night. At least I can fight that. If I'm in bed, I don't get up to eat junk!

I did a big clean and re-stocking before surgery, so the kitchen is full of healthy, high-fiber (but easy to eat/make) things like couscous, bagged salad, whole wheat bread, and whole wheat crackers. I've tried to speak up since I've been home (and mom/boyfriend have been cooking), and so far have gotten a salad added to every meal (except pancakes this morning, which he was really excited about making) or a whole-wheat side dish.

I'm not going to look two gift horses in the mouth and tell them NOT to cook, but since neither one will make stuff in the kitchen without me hovering, I've been able to offer good side dish suggestions...and mom's been willing to hold the dog's leash and walk slowly with me up and down the block.

I try, really try, to clean out the fridge each week when I get home with the groceries, and will work hard to enforce that when other people do the shopping. I asked for books and puzzles, mostly, as gifts, instead of chocolate and flowers Smiler

A friend of mine and I actually view throwing half a stale cake or tossing 3 day old store bought cookies as a guilty pleasure of sorts... We find it very satisfying. Smiler

My home stash went out with the garbage shortly after Christmas. The only holiday treats left are some chewy candies a coworker gave me, and I don't like them.

Work, however, is a minefield! All this week, the office kitchen has looked like a bakery exploded in it -- cakes, pies, cookies, candy, you name it. I discreetly tossed the remains of a week-old bag of store-bought iced gingerbread men in the wastebasket yesterday afternoon. Nobody noticed. I know it's not fair to throw away other people's food, but it was a way to regain some control.

Will have to come up with a plan for Monday.

Having posted on the WW LT board for 2.5 years now... You might actually be shocked at the number of WW members (and even STAFF members) who bake and give cookies, candy, etc.

I remember a post from one person who was going to put together a "goodie basket" of "WW Friendly, Low-Point treats". It basically added up to a basket of candy, cookies, pretzels... and other foods that a lot of people find to be triggers.

The giver of the basket looked at it as "3 Hershey Kisses are only 2 points!" but never considered that the recipient of the basket may be looking at it and thinking, “OMG! I’ve just been handed 100 points of empty calories!! What was she thinking”.

Also, it is probably fair to say that people are people first… and WW members second… and I think that sometimes the urge to make/give food is sort of overwhelming for some people at the Holidays. It is sort of a benign gift… not a LOT of emotion attached to it… not too expensive.

Is it possible that you have been the beneficiary/victim of re-gifting? It is possible that she received this as a gift and couldn’t bring herself to toss it… and passed it on to you?

As for my own “stash”…

I was out of town by myself, and while I was gone, dh stocked the freezer with about 4 dozen toaster waffles. Sad/Happy to say, the waffles are gone… Sad, as I ate most of them (and syrup up to Mrs. Butterworth‘s waist)… Happy they are gone and fridge/freezer is “clean” again.

Going over to a friend’s house for a fondue dinner tonight. Going to seriously limit the appetizer cheese dipping.

I have a ton of cookies that I need to pitch.
They are pretty stale by now.

The eating out thing is the problem for me. I don't think we have cooked at home but 4 times in the last 2.5 weeks.

This week we have had 3 meals at home, but one of them was a fancy splurge meal for New Year's.

Last night we went out on a date night.
Tonight we are going to the playoff game and then out to dinner. Tomorrow night is out with friends.

Hopefully Monday thru Thursday I can get back on track. Last Monday I CLEANED out the fridge. I took everything off the shelves wiped them down and only put back the stuff that I could remember buying in the last 3 months(in the condiment department.)

I have restocked with some healty items. Hopefully tomorrow morning I can sit down with some cookbooks and plan a menu for next week.

I didn't sleep well, so I am slacking on the exercise front today. HOpe to get back on track tomorrow and on with my 100 mile goal.

For some reason, my husband's family went crazy with the holiday cookies this year. Two people (and everyone knows I'm on Weight Watchers) do not need three dozen cookies and assorted treats. I must have been channeling Denise this year because I asked my husband what he wanted me to keep for him and promptly dumped the rest in the trash. Most of them would have gone stale anyway, but I would have done a lot of damage in the meantime and they weren't worth it to me.

If it had been my family's food, I would have been more tempted because of the nostalgia factor. In fact, the worst day for me this year was probably New Year's Day, because my mom's Italian relatives made all the old family favorites like homemade pizza, pasta, etc. I tried to stay on my plan but I couldn't resist, which is why I had a 3 pound gain at my last weigh-in on January 2 Eeker (hopefully it will disappear this week).
